Olympic Thank You

Personnel from RAF Waddington are amongst several thousand members of the Armed Forces who have been presented with commemorative coins for their role in ensuring that the 2012 London Olympic Games was the resounding success that it was. Many RAF personnel were drafted in at short notice to ensure the Games went without a hitch overseeing the safety of up to 80,000 people who converged on the Olympic Park stadium daily - and thousands more at the other Olympic venues across the capital. Recipients were presented with their coins by RAF Waddington Station Commander Group Captain Al Gillespie on Wednesday 24th April 2013.

One recipient was Master Aircrew (MAcr) Angela Hemlin. MAcr Hemlin was responsible for Military personnel providing security at Wembley Arena for a period of four weeks during July and August 2012. Upon receiving her coin MAcr Hemlin said:

“It was an amazing opportunity to be a part of the Olympics in our country. The public gave us an amazing response and I was proud to be able to represent the Royal Air Force at such an important occasion for the UK.”

Fellow coin recipient Flight Sergeant (FS) Antony Wingate was a member of the team responsible for leading the procession with the medal winners’ national flags and was also responsible for mounting the winners’ flags onto the trapeze ready for the medal presentations and national anthem. FS Wingate said:

“It was an honour and a privilege to represent the Royal Air Force and the United Kingdom during this once in a lifetime opportunity in front of a worldwide audience”

Prime Minister Mr. David Cameron has previously said: 'The volunteers, members of the armed forces, police and others who worked on the Games are the ones who made them possible. These people not only gave up their time, but brought a phenomenal energy and passion to the streets and to Olympic venues up and down the country.”
