RAF 100 Stories on The Chris Evans Breakfast Show

This morning on The Chris Evans Breakfast Show, broadcast on BBC Radio 2, retired Air Commodore Charles Clarke OBE (94) spoke about his time in the Royal Air Force - specifically his time when he was interred at the 'Great Escape' camp in 1944.

Along with other RAF Personnel telling their stories Chris Evans spoke to him about his time at Stalag Luft 3, Zagan, Poland 74 years after The Great Escape - made famous by the film of the same name - where 76 military personnel managed to escape the Luftwaffe-run prisoner of war camp. As well as surviving this famous fiasco he also survived 'the long march' which saw prisoners marching 70 miles in freezing temperatures with limited clothing and provisions.

This was a great way to kick off the RAF100 celebrations, which commence this weekend, by listening to stories of those involved in the Royal Air Force over the last century. To conclude the talks, the Central Band of the Royal Air Force played The Great Escape theme tune.
