Directorate of Ground Training

20170627 Air Cmdr Hunt The Directorate of Ground Training delivers RAF individual training and education policy, governance, assurance and support. It comprises the Training Policy staff, the RAF Central Training School, the Robson Academy of Resilience and the International Defence Training (Air) staff. The Director of Ground Training is also the Senior Air Staff Officer and deputy to the Air Officer Commanding No 22 Training Group. As such he is also responsible for the core HQ personnel based at 22 Training Group HQ in Air Command, RAF High Wycombe.

Training Policy

The Training Policy staff provide policy direction and guidance for all RAF individual training, generic training and physical education. They are responsible for developing and implementing RAF individual training and education policy and strategy. They advise Training Requirement Authority holders and are advocates for Programme Socrates, a wide ranging scrutiny and review to enhance RAF training. Training Policy is the RAF focal point for Defence Trainer Capability. Chief of Staff Training Policy is head of the RAF's specialist training cadre comprising officers of the Training Specialisation and airmen in Trade Group 10.

RAF Central Training School

Located mainly at RAF Halton, but with staff at Cranwell, Cosford and Gloucester, the RAF Central Training School provides assurance, analysis, specialist advice and accreditation for RAF training and education. Training Development Wing supports the development of training solutions for existing and emerging RAF capability . Assurance Wing audits the delivery of RAF training and education, supports statutory 3rd party inspections and undertakes advisory work on behalf of other Defence training providers. Accreditation and Education Wing oversee individual education policy and accredit RAF training. The RAF Apprentice Management Team oversee the delivery of apprenticeships across RAF trade training.

Robson Academy of Resilience

The Robson Academy of Resilience operates from a number of geographically dispersed sites in the UK and overseas. It is responsible for:

  • Adventurous personal development through the RAF Eagles Scheme and Robson Resilience Centres.
  • RAF St Mawgan, the hub for RAF activity in the south west ans a site for Higher Formation Training exercises for RAF, other Service and Joint Defence organisation.
  • Defence Survive, Evade, Resist and Extract (SERE) Training at RAF St Mawgan.
  • Resilience Wing based at RAF Cosford comprising the RAF School of Physical Training, Social, Personal and Emotional Awareness for Resilience (SPEAR) training, Stress Management and Resilience training, Coaching and Mentoring, and Human Factors training.

International Defence Training (RAF)

An integral part of HQ 22 Training Group, but operating out of RAF Halton, the International Defence Training (RAF) staff manage an agreed programme of RAF training solutions for overseas governments in support of Defence Diplomacy and Exports. They also manage the provision of RAF training to UK industry.
