The embarkation of 617 Squadron; alongside their United States Marine Corps counterparts VMFA 211 on HMS Queen Elizabeth has been national news, what is less well known is that No 6 RAF Police (Lightning) Squadron are providing specialist security support on board for the duration of the deployment.
No 6 RAF Police (Lightning) Squadron, based at RAF Marham, have deployed a resource from their Capability Security Flight to embed with the F35 security team, protecting the aircraft and its sensitive information. Utilising the experience gained at RAF Marham, they are able to provide specialist security support covering subjects such as daily operations, personnel security and photography of the aircraft.
This specialist task has required ‘at sea’ safety training to fulfil a task seldom undertaken by RAF Police. However, this is a milestone in the transition to Capability Focussed Squadrons and is further evidence the breadth of contribution made by the RAF Police to exercises and operations around the globe.
CSG21, led by HMS Queen Elizabeth, is the largest concentration of maritime and air power to leave the UK in a generation and will set sail next month on its first operational deployment.
