My career highlight so far

I recently spent a month working with Ukrainian forces, driving them to and from training and welfare facilities whilst they were being trained on new equipment in order to assist in their conflict back home. 

It was really interesting to meet them, to hear their stories and to learn first-hand about their experience on the front lines of conflict. They were really easy to get along with and had a fantastic sense of morale and humour.

The best thing about my current role

Without a doubt the variety of the job. I started one week by working alongside the US Marine Corps to transport some equipment and then by the end of that same week up I was supporting hospitals or the ambulance service on a MACA tasking. Other weeks I could be transporting equipment across several foreign European countries! There aren't many jobs out there that will give you the opportunities that the RAF does.

My career highlight so far

The highlight of my career so far is being part of the Modularised Initial Officer Training No 6 Royal Graduation. To lead the Squadron on to the parade square and march them past Her Royal Highness The Princess Royal, before giving them their first salute as they slow marched up the steps of CHOM. This is a privilege not afforded to all RAFOTA Sqn staff and is undoubtedly the highlight of my career to date.

The best thing about my current role

The best thing about my current role is the variability and being part of their journey into the RAF. One of my reasons for applying for the role at RAF Officer Training Academy was down to the inspirational flight staff I had during Ph1 training, and I wanted to pay that back. Everyone that walks through the doors has a story and getting to know them, mentoring them, and playing a part in the first chapter of their RAF career is an absolute honour.

My career highlight so far

I have been fortunate to enjoy countless incredible experiences thanks to the RAF. Mountaineering in Bavaria, parading in front of the Royal Family during the Festival of Remembrance, and volunteering as a Military Co-Responder with the Ambulance Service, to name a few, makes it hard for me to pick out a leading highlight. However, I would have to say being deployed to Kabul during Op Pitting has been the most rewarding point of my career. I played a critical part in the delivery of Air Transport Security in Kabul Airport during the evacuation, by conducting thorough passenger and hand luggage searches of all evacuees before they were permitted to board RAF Aircraft. Knowing that my work during the airlift directly contributed to the successful evacuation of more than 15,000 people, is an emotion like no other.

The best thing about my current role

The best thing about my current role on Tactical Police & Security Sqn is the incredible travel opportunities. The Sqns primary role being the delivery of Air Transport Security to the RAF’s Air Mobility Force means that I find myself flying to a different location around the world, almost every week. So far, in just under 2 years, I have already visited over 40 Countries with the RAF, from operations in Afghanistan, Mali, and Iraq, to exercises all over North America and Europe. I also provide security for the RAF’s VIP flights, on which I have met HM King Charles, Queen Camilla, and Boris Johnson.

My career highlight so far

My career highlight has been the involvement in Her Majesty The Queen’s funeral procession as Flight Commander for 603 Squadron’s marching contingent. When I joined the Reserves I never imagined I would have the opportunity to undertake such a prominent role and I feel immense pride and honour to have been a part of the late Queen Elizabeth II’s funeral. Following closely is graduating from RAF College Cranwell where I was awarded the MacRobert Sword of Honour as top Reserve Officer Cadet for 2018.

The best thing about my current role

Being an RAF reserve in the regiment is a complete contrast to my civilian role where I’m an Engineering Consultant. I’d say the best thing about it is being able to develop and mentor my Gunners to achieve things they would never achieve in the civilian world – giving them the means to build a set of transferable skills and to help them grow as confident and capable individuals.

My career highlight so far

Out of the many career highlights I’ve had in my four years of service as an Air Cartographer, there are two that especially stand out. The first one was my time overseas to the UAE. The second was having the opportunity to sit on the ramp of a Hercules C130J as it flew low level through the Mach loop. That was such an exhilarating moment.

The best thing about my current role

As an Air Cartographer at No 1 AIDU, I work within the Digital Mapping section. One of our jobs is to produce aircraft cockpit mapping, which is the digital display that the pilots see in the cockpit showing them all the essential flight data. The best part of my job is the visible impact I have on the frontline squadrons which I work very closely with, such as Typhoon. Being able to see where my work is being used within the wider Air Force is extremely rewarding.

My career highlight so far

My career highlight so far has to be getting the opportunity to fly in the Lancaster during the Display Season on Battle of Britain Memorial Flight (BBMF). As 'Warrant Officer Engineering', I travel with the aircraft when it lands away from the Main Operating Base for the weekend, ensuring any issues are captured and dealt with to enable the aircraft to continue to fly.

The best thing about my current role

Having the honour and privilege to meet the veterans throughout the year, hearing their stories of courage, adventure and loss. Understanding the true meaning of the word Hero which affirms the reason why BBMF is so important. Seeing their faces light up when the aircraft start up, brings a smile and tear to even the hardest person on the flight.

My career highlight so far

Choosing just one highlight from a career spanning nearly 30 years is quite challenging. One occasion would be a back seat trip in a Tornado GR4 on a low-level sortie from Lossiemouth to Loch Ness and the West Coast of Scotland, an opportunity I never would have imagined. Others are associated with many trips overseas from Europe to the Middle East and the United States either for Operational deployments, Exercises or Adventurous Training.

The best thing about my current role

The Air & Space Operations profession has the advantage of so many varied roles. I currently work at UK Space Command where I recently led the UK planning team for Ex Space Flag in Colorado Springs. Space is congested and a competitive domain with many hazards from space weather and debris, and also threats from nefarious activity. It’s rewarding to see the plans executed by our frontline units, who excel alongside their coalition colleagues. Then post exercise it’s time for me to review and identify lessons to improve on the process for the next time.

My career highlight so far

The highlight of my career so far is being able to be part of the LGBTQ+ Network as their Media and Comms Lead.  This has allowed me to be part of Pride in London in 2022 and 2023, once marching in uniform then as support staff.  Both times has been incredible, and it makes me proud to be a member of the Royal Air Force.  Saluting the cenotaph at the end of the parade is something I will always remember.

The best thing about my current role

In my current role I am part of a small team helping deliver safety equipment to RAF Bensons aircrew and aircraft.  Doing this role has allowed me to show my reactivity and adaptability with crew coming in with last minute requests.  This has allowed me to gain rapport with aircrew and during detachments I have been flown in both Puma and Chinook flying over the London Heli-Lanes.  Being a “Squipper” is a varied and rewarding role and it has allowed me to continually develop as a person and a service person.

My career highlight so far

This is a really difficult question because there have been so many. I've been very fortunate in my career to be involved in international aid and humanitarian operations in the Caribbean, travel all over the world including the Middle East, the Falklands and Japan, and face loads of engineering challenges that have helped me develop myself professionally as an engineer. Through all of that I've been able to represent both the RAF and the UK Armed Forces on the hockey pitch, which has been an absolute privilege. But the common thread throughout all of it is the people that I've worked with. There are too many examples to count of how they have consistently demonstrated how awesome we are as an organisation.

The best thing about my current role

I'm currently working within Engineering and Logistics Wing at RAF Odiham in support of the Chinook Force. I work with a relatively small team of technicians and interface with all of the Chinook Squadrons, Defence Equipment at Support, and our partners at Boeing Defence UK in order to keep the UK Chinook fleet flying safely whilst maintaining our operational output. For me it's the perfect balance of fast-paced military operations management and in-depth technical problem-solving, and because of the size of our team we are able to work in a way that is very collaborative and that brings out the best in everyone. In this role I've been able to achieve Chartered Engineer status as a member of the Royal Aeronautical Society, which is probably my greatest professional achievement so far, and it's given me the opportunity to really stretch myself.

My career highlight so far

My career highlight so far would be covering Exercise Cobra Warrior 23-1 at RAF Waddington. Being able to go out and be creative around both RAF and Foreign aircraft everyday was brilliant. We also got to learn about how other Air Forces operate. The Indian Air Force brought their own chefs so I was able to eat amazing food everyday while going out and photographing some amazing people and aircraft!

The best thing about my current role

The best thing about my current role is definitely the fact that I do what I love every day. Before joining the RAF, I did photography as a hobby. However, now I do photography every day and get to travel to some amazing places with the RAF. On top of that we have access to the best camera kit in the world, which makes our job more dynamic.

My career highlight so far

In the 11 years since joining, I have had the opportunity to travel to some extremely remote areas. Although a trip to Everest Base Camp as part of an Adventure Training team is up there, my highlight would have to be a two-month secondment to the British Antarctic Survey. I was working on the Antarctic Ice Shelf conducting mast and tower inspections, surrounded by mountains, wildlife and icebergs.

The best thing about my current role

The best thing about my current role on Tactical Communications Wing is the variability and diverse work that we conduct day-to-day. One day, we could be working up a tower at heights of over 100m, and the following day be installing communication links in a new state of the art building. As a squadron, we often have our people deployed all over the world, supporting Operations and Exercises by providing them with network links back the UK.

My career highlight so far

I have been fortunate to have had an extremely varied career, transitioning from fourteen and a half years as a Trade Group 1 Mechanic into life as a Personnel Support Officer. Commissioned life has brought with it lots of variety, opportunity to live all over the UK and a holistic view of the RAF. When I came through Cranwell on Initial Officer Training at age 33 back in 2014, I decided that a job in the Academy was something I would aim to achieve, and I have been lucky enough to have worked at RAF Officer Training Academy for 2 ½ years. This job is the highlight of my career so far.

The best thing about my current role

Within the Academy there is no fixed roll for any one individual during their tenure. Throughout my time I started as a Flight Commander, then transitioned into a Deputy Squadron Commander position and then for my final role, I undertook the position of Deputy Chief of Staff. The best way to answer this question would be two-fold, firstly the variety that accompanies it, but probably more importantly would be the people I work with. They are driven, positive and committed to what they do and the cadets that come through the Academy are enthusiastic and full of drive and anticipation for the future, this genuinely is a great place to work.

My career highlight so far

I have had many career highlights during my 6 years of service; one that particularly stands out would be my deployment to the Falkland Islands back in 2021. I got the opportunity to sit on the ramp of an Atlas A400M as it flew low level conducting maritime reconnaissance and was a passenger on the Voyager as it provided air-to-air refuelling for two Typhoon jets. It really was incredible to have a front row seat, witnessing some of the RAF’s aircraft demonstrate their immense capabilities.  

The best thing about my current role

In my current role I am the Practice Manager of the Dental Centre based at RAF High Wycombe. I initially joined as a Dental Nurse, and previous to this I worked as a Dental Nurse within the NHS and private sector for 2 years. Managing a Dental Centre is a complete contrast and a huge leap from being in a primarily clinical role. This has allowed me to face and overcome many challenges, learn new skills, take on additional responsibilities and the opportunity to develop my leadership skills. I would say the best thing is being in a position that allows me to develop and mentor my staff, giving them the guidance and confidence to build their skills and help them achieve their goals and future aspirations.

My career highlight so far

My career highlight so far is having been part of the military contingent that supported the coronation of His Majesty King Charles III and Queen Camilla. I commanded No 53 ½ Company; comprising staff and trainees of the No1 School of Technical Training, and provided ceremonial route lining duties in front of Parliament Square in London. This once in a lifetime event was an opportunity to honour our new Commander in Chief and was a day of immense pride for myself and all those who took part.

The best thing about my current role

My current role is that of Deputy Squadron Commander of Aerosystems Training Squadron at the Defence School of Aeronautical Engineering, RAF Cosford. Responsible for the management and development of Phase 2 engineering (Avionics) trainees, it is a tremendous privilege to oversee and support their learning journey and professional growth. Helping to support and nurture future RAF engineering talent and witnessing their transformation from newly inducted Air Recruits to front line ready engineers, is truly rewarding.

My career highlight so far

I’m really blessed in having had way too many highlights.  There have been ceremonial occasions such as Remembrance, which can be incredibly moving and a privilege to lead.  Then there have been deployments – I’ll never forget Christmas in the Falklands, Midnight Communion in a cram-packed church just after sunset; or deploying in the Middle East as the first Covid lockdown struck – figuring out what to do and how to do it.  Actually, probably the most satisfying period was three years at Cranwell journeying alongside Officer Cadets as they developed through Phase 1 training, realising their true potential.

The best thing about my current role

My brand-new role at HQ Air is Staff Chaplain to the Chaplain-in-Chief. It gives me a brilliant opportunity to see what’s happening across the Air Force and to figure out how Chaplaincy can meaningfully help others. Previously, I was a parish minister for ten years, and have served in the RAF now for another ten. Parish Church, Station Chaplain, or staff work, it’s all a similar vocation: “to serve and not to be served”, as our Profession motto says. Helping people, wherever they’re at, whether religious or not, is what it’s all about!

It’s an amazing honour to serve.

My career highlight so far

The travel opportunities I have been given are most definitely my career highlight to date.  My role in Defence Primary Health Care covers many overseas locations, and I have been fortunate enough to fulfil it in Brunei, Gibraltar, Cyprus, and Falkland Islands as well as various locations across the UK. I thrived on the challenge when working alongside international healthcare systems to support our people and I benefitted from the cultural differences and experiences these countries had to offer.

The best thing about my current role

Having only been in my current role at Tactical Medical Wing (TMW) for 6 months, the best thing is working in an Operationally focused environment. I make up part of a small team of Pharmacy Technicians within TMW, but we are very much key contributors to the Wing output whether that is in support of Strategic Aero-med or to Operations, we contribute to the enablement of medical care across the Globe. We take the time to reflect and act upon all lessons identified, allowing us to generate and sustain operational effectiveness safely, whatever the demand.  I feel a huge sense of pride and achievement in all that we deliver, but especially when our kit is prepped and ready to leave in support of Operations.

I dedicate much of my time to the RAF Judo team, embodying resilience and discipline. From hard training to prestigious competitions, the team has provided me with not just personal triumphs but also allowed me to develop for a leadership role. Appointed RAF Judo Team Manager, I now develop aspiring Judoka, blending seasoned skills with strategic judgment. It truly humbles me to witness their great transformation and growth on and off the Judo mat.

The best thing about my current role

Immersed in a dynamic Tri-Service environment, I have the chance to enrich my expertise with multifaceted and collaborative challenges. Coordinating efforts across the 3 services has developed my adaptability and problem-solving and has expanded my technical skills in a cross-functional setting. This exposure has enthused me to continue learning and I now thrive on complexity and innovation.

Transitioning from AS1 to a Junior Officer, this role at Defence School of Logistics and Administration has given me a robust foundation to start my career on, emphasising commitment, determination, and solidarity. Its diverse tasks are shaping me into a more capable professional, broadening knowledge and cultivating vital qualities for Operational Support success.

My career highlight so far

The highlight of my career so far is being at the forefront of providing operational support to UK personnel and assets worldwide. I use a variety of bespoke tools and analytical techniques that make my day-to-day job extremely interesting, and I get to provide near real time intelligence towards Defence priorities and tasking; call me a geek, but that is a huge highlight to me.

The best thing about my current role

One of the best parts of my current role is the diverse and inclusive environment in which I work in. I collaborate with personnel from across the three Services and civilians, all of whom come from various backgrounds and bring unique perspectives. Additionally, I take immense pride in seeing those I lead and mentor flourish both inside and outside of the workplace.

My career highlight so far

I count myself very fortunate and lucky to be able to say that I have had multiple RAF career highlights to date. From receiving best recruit awards in phase one and phase two training, to winning four football Inter Service titles, one of which I was very proud to be the captain for. I’ve also had the immense pleasure of meeting HRH Prince William as well as the Lionesses, on more than one occasion, and have travelled to numerous countries around the world including the middle and far east. 

The best thing about my current role

Currently based at a Typhoon unit, I get to travel wherever they deploy. I’ve ‘trailed’ alongside Typhoons and watched them refuel in the air as I sat onboard the Voyager eating my dinner! Passing through three different countries in as many days before reaching the Exercise location in the Far East, you live and work alongside a small team of engineers, movers and other trades which is great fun. I also travel with the Typhoon Display Team as part of Public Relations and get to meet and chat with members of the public at air shows in the UK and overseas!

My career highlight so far

I once had the privilege of working within the Medical and Dental Servicing Section (MDSS), a specialisation who fall under the Tactical Medical Wing umbrella. This experience allowed me to maintain highly specialist life-supporting equipment. As a member of the Team, I was deployed to Afghanistan and South Sudan, providing the ability to safely move critically ill patients through the Aeromedical Evacuation capability. 

Another standout moment was working alongside a close-knit group of medical experts, conducting the repatriation of patients with highly infectious diseases – a challenging yet rewarding responsibility that has left a lasting impression on me.  

The best thing about my current role

We have undoubtedly all undergone training at some point in our lives. How many times have we been critical of what we were taught and had opinions on how it could be done better? I have also been guilty of this!  

The Joint Training Development Team are a part of the wider Defence Systems Approach to Training - this is where the training magic happens! Roles are analysed, courses are designed, and training is delivered. I’m going to be cheeky and state two best things about my job.  

Firstly, I get to suggest how things are trained, what is trained and where it will take place. Think of all those things you thought were taught needlessly, well, I have the opportunity to remove those and add new, exciting things – shaping the future technician.  

The second, is having the opportunity of working with personnel from the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers. I’ve had the chance to help design courses for the Army; it’s not just RAF around here! Imagine an RAF technician having a hand in the training for an AS90 (you may have to Google that)!

My career highlight so far

My career highlight so far has been my deployment to Diego Garcia where I was employed as a Royal Overseas Police Officer (ROPO) and undertook CSI duties working alongside the US military, Royal Navy and Marines. Whilst there I deployed on the US Naval Ship Pomeroy, assisting with routine Fishery Patrols to provide a deterrent to illegal activities. Back on the island I attended multiple National Wildlife Refuge events when off duty. These are all experiences that would not be possible in a ‘normal’ job. 

The best thing about my current role

The best thing about my current role on Security Consultancy Flight is travelling to various stations and locations both in the UK and overseas, regularly meeting new people and seeing how different units/trades/sections all contribute in their own way. My role includes being involved with SATT (some may know it as RED Team). This allows me to experience a fun and unique side to the RAF Police, that not many people have the opportunity to be a part of.

I started my Civil Service career twenty-seven years ago and I’ve had many career highlights, but what stands out the most is the Technical Training system roles I have worked in within the requirements, design, delivery and assurance areas. These roles have provided me with the excellent career and personal development opportunities that the MOD offers, gaining various teaching, management, and project management qualifications and more recently, gaining an MSc in Educational Leadership and Management.

The best thing about my current role

The people! I have the privilege of working amongst such a diverse range of Defence engineers and technicians across all three Services, industry, academia and our international partner nations. Seeing the latest technologies and capabilities coming into service, as well as the legacy platforms and equipment that still serve our Defence needs well, makes my role challenging, yet rewarding.

My career highlight so far

I deployed as part of 3 Mobile Catering Squadron in support of Op Ellamy, based at Trapani Air Base in Sicily for 3 months, feeding circa 150 Service Personnel. This was a fast-paced deployment via a 4-day road move from RAF Wittering. On site we built a small Deployed Catering Facility which provided 24hr feeding. This was the first overseas Op I had deployed on, and I learnt so much about myself and the role. Sicily is an incredibly beautiful country, and I was extremely lucky to see this part of the world as an RAF Chef.

The best thing about my current role

A recent internal transfer from a Training to an Operations role on 3 Mobile Catering Squadron has been an aspiration ever since I first joined the Squadron back in 2009. The role sits within the operational heartbeat of the Squadron, where all Operation and Exercise taskings are logistically managed. It’s a busy but extremely rewarding role and one of the best Flight Sergeant jobs, I believe, within our profession. The job involves collaborating with a great team of enthusiastic individuals who really care about their deployed role and catering delivery, both in the UK and overseas.

My career highlight so far

My career highlight so far is being involved in the state funeral as part of the RAFC Cranwell Marching contingent, something that I would never have imagined being a part of, however, being at the RAF Officer Training Academy (RAFOTA) has given me so many opportunities outside of my day-to-day job. Following the funeral I was then asked to be the Escort for the RAFC Cranwell Colour for the King’s Coronation. This was surreal and I will always be thankful to those who gave me the opportunity. Being able to march down the Mall representing not only the RAF, but RAFC Cranwell, RAFOTA, the RAFP and HM Forces was an unbelievable feeling of pride and honour.

The best thing about my current role

Helping to develop the future of the RAF by coaching and mentoring the next generation is the best part of my current role. But it’s also helping me to develop as an individual with the variety of roles that I undertake within RAFOTA; one day I’ll be inspecting cadet accommodation, the next I can be on practical leadership exercises at Beckingham training Camp or in a classroom delivering theory lessons, then I will be on a graduation parade. The role is so varied, with each course bringing so much variety due to having different perspectives and ideas from the cadets. No course is the same which is one of the things I love about my job.

My career highlight so far

A career highlight for me was in fact my first engagement with RAF Music Services - the D-Day 75th anniversary commemorations held in Portsmouth in June 2019. I played as part of the tri-service orchestra, sharing the stage with veterans, significant heads of state and celebrities, and watched by Her Late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. Growing up on the south coast, it was was lovely to return to Portsmouth and we always have a laugh performing with our counterparts from the Royal Marines Band Service and Royal Corps of Army Music. No rivalry at all, of course!

The best thing about my current role

The variety of work we do in RAF Music Services has to be its major unique selling point. Throughout the year we perform on a global stage for major state operations such as the recent celebrations surrounding the Coronation of Their Majesties King Charles III and Queen Camilla. It’s fantastic to continue historical traditions performing at routine ceremonial events including Changing the Guard at Buckingham Palace and the Ceremony of the Keys at the Tower of London. We also have a healthy concert diary, bringing chamber, military and symphonic wind band music to audiences up and down the country. Since COVID, overseas travel is back on cards, with tours in Sweden, Canada and Cyprus planned this year. It’s also very worth mentioning how unique it is to be able to combine life as a musician with the stability, support and benefits that a career in the Armed Forces offers.

My career highlight so far

So many highlights: working in the PEd Flt at RAF Aldergrove during Op Banner was very rewarding, supporting various agencies during difficult times. I was fortunate enough to be selected to form a team to represent British Forces Cyprus in the Raid Des Cedres, a ski touring event in Lebanon, which was an amazing opportunity to visit this country and experience a different culture. Tours to the Falklands are also a highlight, being able to see animals you wouldn't ordinarily see in their natural habitats whilst taking part in Adv Trg was very special.

The best thing about my current role

Variety, each day is never the same, I get to meet and work with people from across the Whole Force. One day I can be forecasting spending for future projects, the next day I'm out climbing on the Cornish cliffs or enjoying the outdoors leading walks along the Southwest Coast Path. Providing opportunities for others to make the best of being at RAF St Mawgan gives me a lot of satisfaction. Supporting our personnel by providing guidance and opportunities to remain fit and healthy is a large part of my role.

My career highlight so far

I have been extremely lucky with the experiences I have had so far in my almost 7 years service. I was selected to be a Half Company Commander on Op Bridges, HM The Queen's Funeral. This was an incredibly sobering but honourable experience, one that probably will not be matched by any future ceremonial duty in my career. The best thing about my current role

I am currently deployed for 6 months as the media officer in the Falkland Islands. The best thing about this role is the versatility, and the opportunity to get out around the islands to capture different events and exercises going on. I have been out to the Remote Radar Heads via helicopter, been aboard the Sir David Attenborough for a tour of the ship, and will shortly be going aboard HMS Forth for a two week trip around the South Georgia Islands. Amongst all of this, I have swam with wild dolphins, seen penguins and elephant seals and seen well over 10000 sheep!

My career highlight so far

Leading a team of players, medical and media staff to India to both coach and play rugby. The backdrop of the Himalayas, the Indian Jungle and the hustle and bustle of the Bangalore streets made this experience truly unique. We coached sports days and rugby sessions to underprivileged kids from the streets and remote Indian villages, and played in a tournament against other Indian teams, all while making a documentary. Mixing rugby with travel is a dream for me, experiencing Holi festival in India while coaching kids and high calibre players is not something you can do with every job.

The best thing about my current role

I get to work with the RAF's newest fighter aircraft (F-35B), which is pretty cool in itself, but the location is the game changer. I work and live in Southern California which is great for our aircraft and pilots because it’s sunny 95% of the year so flying is never an issue, but it's also great for my family and I because we get to travel loads. Having covered off 15 states so far, this role has offered me the opportunity to experience something really unique to the RAF.

There have been many highlights to my 34-year career as a Training Officer! If I’m allowed to pick two, I would say advising developing international forces on training and serving as Officer Commanding (OC) Base Support Wing at RAF Cosford. OC Base provides the opportunity to make a difference across the whole HR spectrum, and on the largest Phase 2 Training Unit in the RAF, the importance of getting this right for so many at the start of their career is equally a challenge and a privilege.

After retirement from Regular Service, I took up a full-time reservist Media and Communications Officer role in September 2023 at RAF Shawbury, and what a fantastic move it has proven to be! I really enjoy promoting the positivity of what the Services offer in terms of opportunities for young people, as well as showing the importance of our training to UK Defence and also the benefits that RAF Shawbury provides as a fully integrated employer and neighbour in Shropshire.

My career highlight so far

I’ve had so many amazing opportunities in the last 16 years. One rather counter-intuitive highlight was spending Christmas and New Year in Mali. I was with my amazing Squadron mates – there was such as sense of community, being away from home, and I don’t think I’ve laughed so much in my life! As a Chinook pilot, another highlight was seeing a Falkland Islanders' incredible enthusiasm for the sound of a Chinook flying overhead, even 25 years after the end of the Falklands’ War. Another highlight was 2 weeks spent living in the desert, learning to be a survival instructor. Since I changed branch to Air Ops (Systems) I've been privileged to be part of some momentous events, including the funeral of Her Majesty the Queen, a G7 summit, and the UK’s response to the coup in Sudan. I’m very proud to have been involved in their success.

The best thing about my current role

The exposure to the workings of the strategic level. I'm part of the team who organise and run the RAF’s Executive Committee and the Main Board. In this role, I get to see our senior leaders operating as an executive team to get their heads around the RAF’s challenges and opportunities. I also get to support the governance of the RAF. The Main Board is a bit like a company’s Board of Directors – it includes the RAF’s civilian Non-Executive Board members. Also, seeing the sheer scale and scope of what the RAF’s people are doing, and getting a better understanding of Air’s relationship with Defence, HM Treasury and other government departments has been eye-opening.

My career highlight so far

In a career that started in April 1997, it is quite hard to pinpoint a single highlight, however being selected for Royal British Legion Festival of Remembrance at Royal Albert Hall in front of our newly crowned monarch is one of them. I have been fortunate to have had assignments in Germany, Northern Ireland, Cyprus and various UK Stations, and been involved with exercises/deployments in the Falkland Islands, Oman, Qatar, UAE & USA. Due to work completed in Cyprus, I was rewarded with a flight in a Red Arrow Hawk during their training in May 2008.

The best thing about my current role

My current role is that of Deputy Flight Commander for B Flight, ISR Enabling Squadron, 1 ISR Wing. Managing a team of 21 Cyberspace Communication Specialists, we provide real-time IT knowledge, guidance, and expertise to facilitate the processing and dissemination of intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance collection from airborne platforms to intelligence analysts. This is a critical enabler for front-line operations that inform key decision makers, seeing the contribution Cyberspace professionals have to the intelligence cycle and its impact is highly rewarding.

My career highlight so far

Prior to commissioning into the People Operations Profession in 2023, I was an RAF Musician, playing the trumpet/cornet. My career highlights with RAF Music Services include the RAF100 Parade in London, performing with Sir Tom Jones at the Festival of Remembrance, and sounding the Last Post at the Great Escape 75 Commemorations in Poland. I also feel fortunate to represent the RAF and UK Armed Forces at ice hockey; a particular highlight (amongst many!) was representing the RAF Aces at the CARHA Ice Hockey World Cup 2016 in Windsor, Ontario, with over 100 teams competing from across the globe!

The best thing about working in Air Finance within the Costing Cell is the direct contribution we have in delivering RAF activity and military operations.

Knowing that the financial information we provide assists in strategic level decision-making across the Ministry of Defence is extremely rewarding. Additionally, it's continuously motivating that we can see first-hand how our outputs as a Costing Cell impact the front line and support the RAF in achieving its objectives.

Every day brings something new and to work within Air Finance amongst a great team of people and such expertise is a privilege.

My career highlight so far

I have had many career highlights or moments that have meant a lot to me, such as taking part or contributing to Operations around the world as well as travelling to far flung places. I have also had the pleasure of meeting the late Queen. A standout highlight has been a recent detachment to the Falklands, flying most days, the sights were incredible: seeing penguins, whales, dolphins and icebergs. Another of my highlights is racing in the Karting Championship, travelling the country racing and meeting people from different stations and services. This has allowed me to race in a bigger Championship taking part in 24hr races.

The best thing about my current role

There are lots of great things about my current role, such as the variety and travel. As an Air Loadmaster, no trip, route or day is ever the same. This keeps the job interesting and keeps you on your toes. There’s lots of responsibilities organising various things and making sure everything goes to plan. The travel is great, I’ve been to places that I would never have visited otherwise. Also, the opportunity to do sport and adventure training is great.

My career highlight so far

Being part of 1 Expeditionary Logistics Squadron Fuels Support Team. From becoming SQEP on Joint Operations Fuel System Light Forces to conducting Air Landed Aircraft Refuelling System serials with various Air Frames. This led to trials with Typhoon where I was hose end for the first hot refuel. All of this set the foundations for future trials with the F-35 Lightning and working towards the Agile Combat Employment concept.

The best thing about my current role

The variety of taskings that are available and the amazing locations where they're located. In the past 12 months I was the first 1 ELS supplier to support F-35 Lightning on Exercise Northern Edge in Alaska. I deployed on Op Azotize supporting Typhoon undertaking Baltic Air Policing Missions in Estonia and bolstered the Deployed Supply Group on Exercise Spears of Victory in Saudi Arabia. I am currently looking forward to my next deployment on Exercise Pitch black in Australia, supporting Typhoon on a multi-national exercise. All these amazing opportunities have been conducted along side my primary role of 1 ELS Ops JNCO.

My career highlight so far

I've been lucky to have been involved in several extraordinary events, but my one RAF career highlight so far is a performance with the RAF Squadronaires at The Festival of Remembrance at the Royal Albert Hall, watched by His Majesty King Charles III, recorded and televised live on the BBC. Performing at the Royal Albert Hall has been a lifelong ambition and to perform there with such an amazing group of musicians at such a unique and prestigious event (& live on the BBC) was very special indeed.

The best thing about my current role

The variety of music within RAF Music makes the role challenging and extremely enjoyable and my musicianship is constantly stretching and improving.  In terms of the parade and ceremonial work RAF Music contributes to, it is an honour to participate in the traditions of military music and get a unique insight into big events such as the coronation of King Charles III.

My career highlight so far

I have been in the RAF Police for four and a half years and I have had multiple career highlights, from deploying on Operation Pitting in Afghanistan to setting up the Air Transport Security detachment in Poland. Another highlight has been trailing with the F-35s after their deployment to Alaska, bringing them back to the UK. I also had the pleasure in taking part of the Battle of Britain Parade and deploying to the Falkland Islands for 6 months on policing duties. 

The best thing about my current role

I am currently based on 1(Tactical) Police and Security Squadron at RAF Brize Norton and deploy on routine Air Mobility Taskings globally. I have deployed to the High North of Norway, to as far South as the Falkland Islands, to multiple states in the USA, and to Asia and Australia. All the deployments have been unique and each different to the last, which is the best part about the job. You also get to work alongside the flying squadrons, movements and other trades, as well as other militaries globally.

My career highlight so far

I was the captain of the last German Air Force aircraft to leave Kabul during the evacuation in August 2021. Whilst airborne, our mission changed from something relatively simple into a complex personnel recovery mission. My German team and I were able to call upon our world-class training to adapt, overcome, and safely bring two soldiers back home to their families. The military fosters a great sense of pride in a job well done, and this was the moment I am most proud of.

The best thing about my current role

Without a doubt, the variety. In my 25 years in the RAF, I have flown five different operational aircraft types for three different air forces. My current role as an A400M Atlas instructor has had me flying low-level through the Norwegian fjords, evacuating civilians from one crisis area, bringing urgently needed humanitarian aid to another, and planning a two-week long refuelling exercise in Hawaii. And all of this in the past 18 months! The RAF offers such amazing opportunities if you are willing to raise your hands and grab them.

My career highlight so far

Most of my time since Basic Training has been on Supply Training at various bases in the UK, including RAF Cosford, Leeming and Lossiemouth.  There are many activities to get involved with if you have time to commit.  Later in the year, I plan to join a trekking group in northern Spain for some Adventurous Training in the mountains and look to volunteer for overseas operations in the Falkland Islands and Cyprus.  

The best thing about my current role

The draw for me is the varied nature of the role, where I can use some of my civilian experience in accountancy to transfer into a specialised area of my Supplier role. Joining the Reserves, and specifically 607 Squadron, has been the challenge I’ve needed. Being a single parent, you think that opportunities are limited.  But the Reserves offers the flexibility I need to take care of my children whilst pursuing something I’ve always wanted to do, which is join the military. For the first time in a long time, I’m doing something just for me, and it feels great!

My career highlight so far

I have been lucky enough to have had some wonderful experiences in the RAF, first as a Regular and now as a Reserve. Trips to India and Australia have to rank up there as some of my highlights, as well as UK events such as the Edinburgh Tattoo and the Changing the Guard ceremonies in both London and Windsor. My absolute highlight has to be playing in the band for the funeral of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II; it was an absolute privilege to be one of those musicians in the procession through London. It is something I will always remember.

The best thing about my current role

As a Reservist, I get a lot of flexibility about when I work. This suits me well as I can combine being a mum at home to my three sons (who keep me very busy!) with the varied and exciting opportunities of my job. I might be playing for a dinner with my Saxophone Quartet, or playing with the Regular musicians for a concert or parade, but I am able to fit it all around my civilian life. It’s the best of both worlds, not missing out on time with my family or the opportunities available being part of RAF Music.

The highlight of my career so far has been deploying overseas to RAF Akrotiri within the first six months of arriving at 1 Squadron RAF Regiment. This has allowed me to experience a new and exciting environment. I think the next step in my career will be to attend and pass a Machine Guns Cadre, becoming qualified in the Sustained Fires role. This will allow me to be part of the Support Weapons Flight. My long-term goal is to attend and pass the Pre-Parachute Selection Course, followed by a posting to 16 Air Assault Brigade, initially as a Tactical Air Control Party signaller, with the overall goal of training to become Joint Terminal Attack Controller. 

The best thing about my current role

The best thing about my role as a RAF Regiment Gunner is the ability to learn and operate with different weapon systems, from the Rifle to the General-Purpose Machine Gun Light Role. Also, being able to practice individual defensive tactics, this has allowed me to fully understand the discipline required within my role and has given me great confidence in what I am able to achieve.

My career highlight so far

One of the most defining highlights of my RAF career has been the opportunity to serve as an ambassador to the Royal British Legion while specialising in a multitude of military skills, including sniping and machine guns. This unique combination has allowed me to honour the legacy of our veterans while continuously pushing the boundaries of my own capabilities. Whether representing the RAF in ceremonial events or honing my expertise on operations, every experience has deepened my appreciation for our Armed Forces' rich traditions and the sacrifices made by those who came before us. By combining my passion for serving my country with the proficiency in diverse military skills, I've been able to make a meaningful impact both within the RAF and the wider community, embodying the values of dedication, honour, and service every step of the way.

The best thing about my current role

The best thing about my role in the RAF is the dynamic diversity it offers, spanning from the intense operational challenges of serving in the RAF Regiment to the exhilarating responsibilities as the RAF Triathlon Performance Director. Transitioning between these two worlds allows me to experience the full spectrum of what the RAF has to offer. In the Regiment, I'm entrusted with the development of Regular and Reserve personnel. As the Triathlon Performance Director, I have the privilege of nurturing talent, fostering a culture of excellence, and leading our athletes to achieve their utmost potential on the global stage. The balance between these roles not only keeps me engaged and fulfilled but also allows me to bring a unique perspective to each endeavour. It's a testament to the RAF's commitment to versatility and personal growth, and I'm proud to play a part in both realms.

My career highlight so far

One of my career highlights was when 607 Squadron was given the Freedom of Durham. It was good to march through the city centre with pride and see everyone coming out to cheer us on because they appreciated us.  The camaraderie that we experienced when we took part in RAF100 was phenomenal and to be on parade in front of the Royal Family was a pinch yourself moment. I also took part in the Remembrance Service at the Royal Albert Hall, which was an amazing experience. I’ve never seen a group of adults so nervous about a set of stairs before!

The best thing about my current role

The best thing about my current role is the skillset that you are taught, both from a military and trade perspective. When you look at the tasks at first, it seems too much but when you set to work, it is surprising what you can achieve both mentally and physically. Once you are trade trained, the opportunities available to you are huge and varied. You can be working on a Royal function or dining in night or cooking out in the field. I’ve cooked with Army and Navy colleagues as well. You have an immediate bond and friendship with them and connect as a team.

My civilian work and how this and being in the Reserves complement one another:

Very recently, I have transferred to a Full-Time Reserve Service contract because my PTVR role gave me the insight, strength and knowledge that I really wanted to work in the military full-time. My current workplace appreciated the skills that I gained as a Part-Time Volunteer Reserve (PTVR). My role as a PTVR was a way of rediscovering who I was after being a parent with younger children, I needed that challenge and am so grateful for it.

My career highlight so far

A definite highlight was driving the RAF ushers to France to join the 75th anniversary of the D-Day landings. It was such a privilege to be part of this massive commemoration. I also felt this sense of pride when I volunteered to take part in the RAF100 celebrations in 2018. We were part of the marching party that moved down The Mall in London to Buckingham Palace and sensed it was a real honour to march in front of the Royal Family, even if we did suffer from many blisters! 

The best thing about my current role

The best thing about my current role as part of 607 Squadron is the variety of tasks that you can do. As a driver with many licences, there are so many opportunities open to you. I deployed to RAF Coningsby for 18 months where I was refuelling the entire fleet of the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight (BBMF). I especially enjoyed refuelling the Dakota and was given a tour of the back of this aircraft, which was fascinating. I was able to reflect on my time in France for the 75th anniversary and think about how this aircraft was used to great effect in the D-Day landings. 

My civilian work and how this and being in the Reserves complement one another:

I was a retail manager but unfortunately got made redundant. This was when I volunteered for an 18-month deployment to RAF Coningsby and from that I gained so much experience. That deployment opened an avenue to apply for a job as a Civil Service driver at RAF Leeming, which is what I do now. Being in the Reserves gives you so much confidence and stretches what you think that you can do. I didn’t start driving until I was 35 years old but now I am a professional driver!

My career highlight so far

I‘ve been in the RAF just gone 4 and half years and when asked what the biggest highlight is since joining I’m torn between two events. Attending Exercise Arctic Phoenix in Bardufoss, Norway late 2023, the array of tasks and opportunities presented were amazing! From staying out overnight learning survival skills in -22 degrees to viewing the Northern Lights – twice! The other would be being part of Operation Orbite, the 80th Anniversary of the D-Day landings. Being so close to His Majesty King Charles and other VIPs was surreal!

The best thing about my current role

I currently work at Joint Force Air Component (JFAC) in the Combat Service Support Division at Air Command, helping our highly deployable personnel stay deployable for Exercises, Training or Courses. Everyday is different, as cliché as that sounds, the sense of camaraderie in JFAC is something I look forward to everyday!

My career highlight so far

The highlight of my career so far would be travelling to Alaska as part of a detachment with 617 Squadron. On the trip, I was able to work in a challenging environment, and having the opportunity to work alongside the Australian and American Air Forces overseas was an amazing experience. The work I did helped prepare me for many challenges I’d face later in my career and the opportunities to travel and see Alaska were incredible.

The best thing about my current role

The people are easily the best thing about my role. Working in the Forces can be demanding and challenging at times. Being away from friends and family whether overseas or on the opposite side of the country presents a challenge for us all. The Squadron is welcoming to all arrivals and makes sure that everyone feels a part of the Squadron. We also make sure that there’s time for those around us, with events for friends and family to come along and be a part of our lives and enjoy the RAF like we do.

My career highlight so far

Since joining the Band of the Royal Auxiliary Air Force in 2016, I have been involved in so many events it’s hard to choose the highlights. From the Royal Edinburgh and Belfast International Military Tattoo, to state occasions including Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II’s Platinum Jubilee, the State Funeral of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and The Coronation of Their Majesties King Charles III and Queen Camilla. Plus, performing at the Royal Albert Hall for the RAF 100 concert, playing with the woodwind quintet in Berlin and as part of a duo in Cyprus.

The best thing about my current role

I originally served in the regular RAF as a Musician in the 1990s. After a significant gap, it’s now great to be able to serve again as a Reserve, I never thought I’d have the opportunity to do this again after so long! It’s flexible and fits really well with my day job, with so many transferable skills from one to the other. I absolutely love being a RAF Reserve Musician. I’d say the best things are the opportunities to be involved in so many different occasions both in the UK and overseas, the training and skills I am acquiring and, of course, the camaraderie amongst my fellow RAF Musicians.

My career highlight so far

I believe I’m part of the best Profession in the RAF! Some career highlights include: being involved in Operation Pitting out of Al Minhad Air Base. New to the trade of Movements, I was redeployed from Operation Cattalo in Duqm, to Al Minhad Air Base, to provide the ground/movements support of all military SP and equipment in and out of Th via various Military Air Transport platforms. Whilst the whole Operation was over a short period, working at that tempo and in such heat (40/50+ celsius), and watching all parties pull together to get the ‘job done’ was fantastic and something I’ll never forget. 

Another additional highlight is winning 8 x Inter Service titles consecutively with RAF Hockey!

The best thing about my current role

Being a RAF Liaison Officer in the Middle East and Asia and a part of Operational Support Squadron, I’m fortunate enough to be able to cover 18 x countries in my Area of Responsibility. This role allows me the opportunity to travel and meet a wide spread of different people in the region, whilst also learning about their cultures and beliefs, one that I don’t think many other roles offer.

My career highlight so far

The opportunity to travel and work within the whole of Defence. I've been away on numerous operations with the RAF including Kuwait, Jordan, Iraq, Afghanistan and Cyprus. My role in the RAF Regiment has also allowed me to work with other services, seeing me detached to 45 Commando Royal Marines for 3 years, completing a further tour of Afghanistan. I also had the opportunity to go on training exercises with the Royal Navy, including operating from a ship for 6 months whilst conducting training in various countries around the Mediterranean.

Further, I was loaned to the Czech Republic government as part of the British Military Advisory Training Team (BMATT), living in Czechia for two years. During this time, I delivered training to a host of foreign militaries including Poland, Ukraine, Kosovo, Serbia, Morocco, and Turkmenistan. Working with other nations was extremely rewarding, as you could see a product in the way the students embraced us as instructors, learnt new skills, and showed great improvement over the 4 weeks of training.

The best thing about my current role

Having spent my time as a Gunner, a Section Commander and a Tac Sergeant on a Very High Readiness squadron, I enjoy mentoring and developing the next generation of war fighters, combining my experience with the technology of the modern era.

I'd feel extremely honoured and proud to be lucky enough to be promoted to the rank of Warrant Officer and posted back to II Squadron RAF Regiment, leading the next generation as the senior soldier on the RAF Regiment's only airborne and premier squadron.

My career highlight so far

When I reflect on my career so far it's very difficult for me to pinpoint one occasion because I have thoroughly enjoyed my time in the RAF. The pride in my parents’ eyes when they saw my brother and I together in uniform at my brother’s graduation ceremony at RAFC Cranwell is something that will always remain with me.

In addition, the gratification I felt whilst walking the mall for RAF 100 was another highpoint in my career so far. I felt so humbled when an elderly woman held my hand at an event at Trafalgar Square and said she always dreamt of being in the military. Seeing me in uniform made her feel so proud. It really was surreal!

I have immense respect for the serving members of Armed Forces who live by our RAF Ethos and Core values, and I feel blessed to be a part of this great organisation.

The best thing about my current role

Currently, I am 1 Group SO3 Force Generation which involves managing the FGen requirements for 1 Group personnel in support of IA FGen tasks. It's a challenging role because you are making the difficult decision of providing a suitable person for an operational role with least impact to Group’s output. This at times can be tricky.

The best thing about my role is that it's reactive, so every day is different. Although some of it can be planned, most of the time you get a curveball, and you'll have to quickly shape everything as per the operational requirement.

My career highlight so far

In 2023 I was given the opportunity to attend a 2 week long course in Arizona, looking at how elite athletes are trained in America. We got to take part in training sessions with high level American Football players, spoke with industry professionals looking at human performance research, and discussed how we could apply this to our Personnel.

I’ve had so many other great experiences in my career so but this one really stood out for me.

The best thing about my current role

For so many people in the Service, physical training is the best part of their day. It’s an opportunity to feel good and see people outside of their usual work environment. I love that I get to be the person to make that happen. I’ve been able to help lots of people achieve their health and fitness goals - to pass the RAF Fitness Test, return from injury, or hit a PB.

In my current role I get to support and educate RAF Regiment Trainees. Seeing them develop from day 1 to reaching the high standards required for the role.
