ARIES - The Magazine of RAF Shawbury

Editor’s Welcome by Warrant Officer Nick Williams.

Hello and thank you for reading this first edition of the Aries Magazine in 2021. We have plenty to read and see in this edition including lots of changes on the unit. We welcomed a new Station Commander Gp Capt Phil Wadlow, a new CO 9 Regiment Army Air Corps and saw several retirements within the Defence College of Air and Space Operations. Alongside this, after months of planning, December saw the arrival of the RAF Shawbury Gliding Club, which relocated (by air) from RAF Cosford. We also bid farewell to the Stn Cdr PA Mrs Gill Jones who has worked for almost 20 years in the Civil Service.

We are thrilled to share the news that some of our personnel here at RAF Shawbury have been honored in the Military commendations list which was announced recently. The start of 2021 also marked 80 years of Radar Control; this essential piece of technology was years ahead of anyone else and allowed our forces to see and intercept enemy aircraft during WWII.

Finally, in February we received the fantastic news that Her Majesty The Queen had graciously appointed Major Tim Peake CMG as Honorary Colonel of 9 Regiment Army Air Corps, one of two wings within No.1 Flying Training School. Everyone at RAF Shawbury looks forward to welcoming him to the Station, when restrictions allow, to show him the world-leading training that takes place here.

I hope you all enjoy reading all the articles in this edition.
