RAF Falcons Make History with First Display at Buckingham Palace

On Saturday 13 May 2017, history was made for the Royal Air Force Falcons Parachute Display Team when they performed at Buckingham Palace for the first time.

The RAF Falcons jumped from a Chinook helicopter and glided into the gardens of Buckingham Palace; it was the grand finale of a special party, hosted by the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and Prince Harry, to honour the children of those who have died serving in the Armed Forces.

Flight Lieutenant Simon Owen, Officer Commanding RAF Falcons Parachute Display Team, said, “It is a real honour to have been invited to perform a display into the gardens of Buckingham Palace for such a high profile event. As our first public display of 2017, and the first time that the RAF Falcons have jumped into Buckingham Palace, the whole Team are extremely proud to be representing the Royal Air Force in front of members of the Royal Family.”

The day included a variety of stalls for everyone to get involved with, from cupcake decorating and circus skills to beatboxing and breakdancing workshops. The families were also entertained by live performances from singer Jess Glynne, ventriloquist, Nina Conti and Britain’s Got Talent winning magician, Lance Corporal Richard Jones.

Corporal Dominic Hodge, a first year RAF Falcon said, “To be selected for the RAF Falcons is a dream come true for me and to be in the position to be jumping into Buckingham Palace, let alone for my first public display leaves me speechless. Being a part of this historic display as an RAF Falcon is a huge honour and a privilege, and an event I am ecstatic to be a part of. This, I will remember for the rest of my life."

Although the party was organised for the children to have a great time, representatives from charities which support families and children dealing with bereavement, including Child Bereavement UK, Winston’s Wish, Scotty’s Little Soldiers and SSAFA (Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Families Association), The Armed Forces Charity, attended to provide practical support and information about their services.

The event, which was organised by one of the world’s leading international event organisers, 'Fait Accompli', is the first of over 60 displays that the Team will conduct this year, which they have been training extremely hard for over the winter months.
