Finding a School

In addition to the local authority website information above, there is a ‘schools finder’ facility on the Direct Gov website which allows you to search for schools and playgroups within a specific distance of your location. This provides details of all schools, their websites, Ofsted reports, term dates, transport and provision of special needs. To access this search engine go to http://schoolsfinder.direct.gov.uk

If you require a list of schools and early year’s facilities local to SFA within the area please contact the HIVE.

Primary and Secondary State Schools

Applications
Contact the local authority who will advise whether applications for schools outside your local area can be processed through them or whether you should liaise directly with the local authority in your new location. To identify the appropriate local authority in England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland log onto http://www.gov.uk/find-your-local-council

Applications for preferred schools require proof of permanent address. If you have difficulty in providing this a Posting Notice is usually sufficient to support the application.

The official database of schools in England with hyperlinks to schools in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland is available at http://schoolsfinder.direct.gov.uk/schoolsfinder . This provides full details of schools and includes primary, secondary, special needs, state and private schools.

Online applications for school places can be made at http://www.gov.uk/schools-admissions/applying where a postcode search links to the relevant page on the local authority’s website.

Ofsted reports can be accessed at www.ofsted.gov.uk

Remember to specify that your child is a service dependant as they attract the Service school premium. This is extra funding to the school provided by the Department for Education in respect of children of serving members of the Armed Forces.

MOD Moving School Packs to support children as they relocate are available from your HIVE

Appeals
You will find details of how to make an appeal in the local authority’s admission letter outlining your offer. The letter will also specify a deadline that you must meet if you want to appeal. In some areas, you may be able to submit your appeal online. Full details are available at www.gov.uk/schools-admissions/appealing-a-schools-decision or from the Local Authority.

Community Development Officers (CDOs) at Stations are able to assist service personnel in the appeals process.

The Children’s Education Advisory Service (CEAS) can also provide practical advice on many educational issues including the appeals process. Tel: 01980 618244

Special Needs
All local authorities have a duty to provide information, advice and support to parents of children with SEN. Most offer access to Independent Parental Supporters (IPSs) who are volunteers trained to provide individual support to parents. To find local Information Advice and Support Services (IASS) in England and Wales log onto www.iassnetwork.org.uk/find-your-iass

You can also contact SSAFA Additional Needs & Disability Adviser - Jane Barnes, Central Office Tel: 0207 463 9234.

If your child has special educational needs you are advised to contact the Children’s Educational Advisory Service (CEAS) to find out about registering your child with them; there are a number of ways in which they may be able to help you. The CEAS provide practical advice on many educational issues including the appeals process. For more information Tel: 01980 618244, Email: enquiries@ceas.uk.com or visit www.gov.uk/childrens-education-advisory-service
