Entitlements and Applications

Pre-school and Nurseries (Early Years)
All three and four year olds are entitled to 15 hours of free nursery education for 38 weeks of the year. This applies until they reach compulsory school age (the term following their fifth birthday). Free nursery education can take place in nurseries, playgroups, preschools or at their childminders. Some two year olds are also entitled to free childcare if certain criteria are met.

Contact the local authority who will advise whether applications for schools outside your local area can be processed through them or whether you should liaise directly with the local authority in your new location. Applications for preferred schools require proof of permanent address. If you have difficulty in providing this a Posting Notice is usually sufficient to support the application.

Remember to specify that your child is a service dependant as they attract the Service school premium. This is extra funding to the school provided by the Department for Education in respect of children of serving members of the Armed Forces.

MOD Moving School Packs to support children as they relocate are available from your HIVE

You will find details of how to make an appeal in the local authority’s admission letter outlining your offer. The letter will also specify a deadline that you must meet if you want to appeal. In some areas, you may be able to submit your appeal online. Full details are available at or from the Local Authority.

Community Development Officers (CDOs) at Stations are able to assist service personnel in the appeals process.

Special Needs
All local authorities have a duty to provide information, advice and support to parents of children with SEN. Most offer access to Independent Parental Supporters (IPSs) who are volunteers trained to provide individual support to parents. If your child has special educational needs you are advised to contact the Children’s Educational Advisory Service (CEAS) to find out about registering your child with them; there are a number of ways in which they may be able to help you. Important Dates

  • Application cut off dates for Reception places is the end of January.
  • Application cut off dates for secondary school places is the end of October.
  • For pupils entering Counties which still have grammar schools, the year 6 pupils sit the 11+ exam in September with the results being available in October in time for the application cut off date.

Post 16 Education

After completing secondary school education, post 16 learners have a choice of establishments providing education and training. These include further education, specialist colleges, sixth form colleges and work-based learning providers.

In addition, a range of training providers and colleges deliver apprenticeships and/or ‘Entry to Employment’ programmes for young people not in education, training or employment.
