Accreditation Programmes

Accreditation activity has created a number of schemes which are available to our personnel, subject to eligibility. The funding of many study programmes may be supported through the use of Standard or Enhanced Learning Credits (SLC/ELCs). Alternatively you may be eligible for the Service's Free Degree Scheme. University Short Course Programme

A long established Tri-Service programme that offers places on short residential courses at a number universities around the UK. It allows personnel to study subjects in 3 categories that will benefit their personal development, with the opportunity to address matters of current importance and research and development within an academic environment

City & Guilds Professional Recognition Awards in Leadership and Management in RAF

A set of awards for the RAF that recognise the leadership and management experience, personal achievement and the applied professional knowledge of both SNCOs and officers. The awards are available in 3 levels and are recognised in many areas of the civilian sector.

Fast-Track membership of the Chartered Management Institute

The CMI aims to promote the art and science of management and develop and support the managers of the future by sharing best practice and setting standards. CMI grades of membership are designed to reflect and recognise an individual’s entire career and educational achievements. Service personnel benefit from a special arrangement to enable fast-track membership of the CMI at different levels.

Membership of the Institute of Leadership and Management

ILM is the largest awarding body for management and leadership qualifications and is also a leading professional body offering personal and professional development opportunities to around 20,000 managers at all stages of their career. The RAF benefits from a corporate membership scheme which is specially tailored to meet the particular needs of the service.

RAF In-Service Degree Scheme

The RAF In-Service Degree Scheme provides the opportunity for eligible commissioned aircrew to accumulate credit towards a degree through flying training, and then go on to complete the qualification through study with the Open University.

MBA scheme for Warrant Officers and Squadron Leaders

Graduates of the WOSP and ICSC(A) qualify for 30 and 60 CAT points respectively at Masters level which can be used towards an MBA through Staffordshire University. A flyer for the WOSP/ICSC(A) accreditation is available for further information.

MSc Entrepreneurial Leadership

Edinburgh Napier University offer accreditation to RAF personnel within their MSc Entrepreneurial Leadership Programme. Accreditation is available from FS for non-commissioned ranks, and Flt Lt for officers. For further information and applications, please visit the university's website -

Work Based Distance Learning Degrees in Business, Engineering and Logistics Management

Lincoln University off a trio of programmes within a Work Based Learning (WBL) framework. Recognising the significant operational experience and training of military and civil service personnel, the programmes are open to all suitably qualified and experienced officers, NCOs and under exceptional circumstances other ranks. MSc Professional Engineering

The University of Derby are able to offer an academic route to Engineers leading to the award of an MSc in Professional Engineering. The course has been designed to provide a pathway to help Engineers gain Charted Engineer statues by providing a flexible work-based MSc. The course is only open to students who are currently employed within engineering, due to the work-based learning requirements. More information is available on the flyer.

University of Portsmouth MSc in Leadership and Management

The University of Portsmouth offers accreditation of prior experience and learning by recognition of the competencies and achievements of Service rank. The MSc in Leadership and Management is completed by utilising a part-time ‘learning at work’ approach. Completion of the MSc also offers membership of the CMI or ILM.
