Unique raffle prize at Lossiemouth Raft Race

A UNIQUE ITEM is one of the raffle prizes at this year’s Lossiemouth Raft Race to be held on Sunday 14th August. Engineers from RAF Lossiemouth’s Aircraft Components Engineering Section (ACES) and Station Workshops have created a chess set from waste metal. The 32 pieces in silver and gold coloured finishes took many hours for the team to produce and are being raffled at this year’s raft race to raise money for charity.

The RAF Lossiemouth engineers have also made a desk paperweight in the shape of a Tornado that will also be raffled for the nominated charities, which this year are the Aberdeen Maternity Hospital’s Neo-Natal Unit and Erskine.

The idea for these one-off items was that of Cpl Paul Mason, an engineer in ACES. He is a member of the Lossiemouth Raft Race committee, Paul said:

“I thought a raffle might help get more money for this year’s charities, and we have some vey good prizes. But I wanted to do something more and thought this might help boost the fundraising a bit. Shaun (Senior Aircaftman Shaun Seaman) and I have been working through our lunch hours and staying on after our shifts to do the work on the chess set and models. All the metals we used were waste pieces. The chess set is certainly a one-off.”

The standard sized chess board is etched with the RAF Lossiemouth station crest.

Raffle tickets will be on sale on the day of the race but can also be bought from Grampian Furnishers (Queen St., Lossiemouth), where the chess set will be on show from Monday 8th to Friday 12th August. Other prizes in the raffle include a tour of Celtic Park, vouchers for pampering sessions, and Wimbledon items.

Also, there will be a limited number of metal key fobs for sale at the race. Produced on station, they are etched with the image of a Tornado on one side.

Gates open at 12.30pm and the race starts at 2.30pm. The raffle prizes will be handed over to the lucky winners after the race prize giving. The raft race will have stalls and entertainment for all ages as well as the raft fancy dress competition and the race itself; music will be provided by the Moray Jazz Band and the Pipes and Drums of 2622(H) Sqn. There are 15 rafts entered for the race.
