RAF Marham Kart Club

To the east of IX (B) Sqn HAS site lies RAF Marham’s best kept secret. Over 6,000 rubber tyres and 50 Rhino Barriers make up Marham Kart Club’s 500 m track complete with all the twists and turns, chicanes and hairpins you’d expect from a professional kart club.

Currently the club has 20 members but with many members either moving station or conducting Out Of Area deployments, we need fresh blood!

With the club as an amenity on camp, we can offer an inexpensive and affordable introduction to Kart racing for all RAF Marham personnel and their dependants (aged eight and over). We cater for all levels of experience and can provide party bookings for all occasions. New members are always welcome and no experience is needed.

The Kart Club offers two types of booking;
GROUP BOOKINGS
£5 per 10 mins, £10 per 15 mins or £20 per 30 mins. This can consist of five karts per race, if there is more than five people, the club members will organize the race into heats to suit your requirements. This is ideal for any occasion or even just mates out for a laugh.

ENDURANCE RACING
£40 per kart per hour, with a maximum of four persons per team. This package gives you the option to hold a one or two hour endurance race, controlled by the club marshals. This race will be four karts racing at once; driver changes and refueling tactics could win or cost you the race! If you are up for a challenge and wish to compete with other sections or departments, this is the event for you.

From Thursday 21st March 2013 the club will host Arrive and Drive sessions, held between the hours of 1700 and 1900 on Thursday nights and is open to anyone who feels the need for speed after a hard days work, but doesn’t want to spend a lot of money to do so. You never know you may be an up and coming F1 driver and you didn’t know it, or if you just fancy a competitive race with your mates this is the best way to do it.

The club will provide helmets, gloves, overalls and the best bit, karts. However, we do ask you to wear shoes that cover the whole foot, no open toe shoes or sandals. There is no height restriction. However, all personnel and dependants must be able to operate the accelerator and brake in a safe manner and we will check before you go racing. If you are under 16 years of age you will need to provide a consent form signed by your parent/guardian.

Additionally, the club provides the opportunity for service personnel to participate in competitive racing at a considerably reduced cost. The club has three brand new Pro-Karts, each powered by two race tuned Honda 160cc 4-stroke engines and can reach speeds in excess of 60mph. Teams of three to four Marham personnel enter each of the Pro-Karts owned by the club into a two hour endurance race in each Pro-Kart round of the RAF Kart Championships. Club members can also use their own Karts at these events where there is a class for high powered 2-stroke karts which can reach speeds of up to 85mph. The club currently has six personnel competing in this class, so help and advice is available to anyone wishing to make a move to high level motorsport. This year we are planning on racing both 2-stroke and 4-stroke teams in a total of eight events throughout the UK, including the International Guernsey Hill Climb in September.

The RAF Championships are held in numerous locations across the UK, from April to October. This involves personnel travelling to the events and camping out ‘track side’. Normally warm up is held on the Friday and then the Pro-Karts race on the Saturday afternoon/evening with practice throughout the morning before. The 2-stroke events are held on the Sunday and consist of several heats, and then a final is held on the Sunday afternoon. This is a great opportunity for personnel to go away for a weekend and really enjoy what they are doing as well as having pride in representing their unit in the RAF Kart Championships. The Club is open to all RAF personnel and their dependants. The Club is looking for more members to help race, run and maintain the karts. There are various committee positions available, so if you fancy a new challenge or just fancy helping out whilst learning some new technical skills we are always happy to hear from you. All we ask is that you are committed and aren’t shy of some hard but rewarding work.
