Bandmaster Central Band of the RAF WO Gardner

Warrant Officer Terry Gardner LRSM LLCM

Born in Margate, Kent, Terry first learned to play the trombone at the age of six. From the age of 14 he played with the Kent County Youth Orchestra and was principal trombonist for the International Youth Orchestra by the age of 16.

He joined the RAF in January 1983 as a direct entry musician and arrived at RAF Uxbridge in March of that year to complete three weeks in the School of Music.

His first posting was the Band of the RAF College, RAF Cranwell where he spent two years before being posted to the Band of the RAF Germany at RAF Rheindahlen. Here he travelled the length and breadth of Europe for six and a half years until the closure of RAF Rheindahlen before being posted back to the Western Band of the RAF based at RAF Locking. After nine years RAF Locking closed and he returned to RAF Uxbridge and became the Drum Major of the Central Band of the RAF. He married Caroline, a horn player in the Band in 2002 and now has two wonderful daughters Phoebe and Katie.

As a Fight Sergeant he was appointed Senior Drum Major of the RAF and looked after all the training for the RAF Music Services within their HQ. His deployment in 2008 took him to Incirlik in Turkey where he was RAF LiaisonOfficer for 99 Sqn, overseeing the C17 flights in and out of theatre. When RAF Uxbridge closed in 2010 he moved to RAF Northolt and was promoted to Warrant Officer in April 2011. Following his promotion he retained the position of Senior Drum Major and was appointed Bandmaster for the Central Band of the RAF.
