Rugby 7

History

In 2006/7 Blythe Crawford and Tim Barlow, then Sqn Ldr and Fg Off respectively, were both independently trying to reinvigorate RAF 7s. They joined forces in 2008 and created the RAF Spitfires. The very first tournament saw them travel to Johannesburg for the South African Defence Force 7s, where we won the Plate trophy. From there we have never looked back.

Our fixture list has developed each year and includes several UK tournaments and at least one overseas adventure. We have now competed in Denmark, the USA, Dubai and annually in India, supporting the Khelo Rugby project. Part of the Spitfires vision has been the combining of sport with charitable endeavours and we continue to raise funds for the RAF Benevolent Fund, Ex POW Association and Khelo.

Key to our successes both on and off the field has been the invaluable support of our primary sponsors, Spitfire Ale and Canterbury. Since 2011 our supporters shirts have sold very well nationwide, making a very significant contribution to our fundraising total.

The squad, and the Spitfires' committee, has grown considerably over the last 9 years. We now operate 2 teams, having introduced the Hurricanes development side in 2015, and rugby 7s continues to grow in the RAF, as it does globally.

The 2016 season includes tournaments in Denver, Munich and Singapore. In 2017 and 2018 we will host our own tournament, to include a Ladies competition, and will hopefully be joined by the Army and Navy. Our ambitions will always include the pursuit of silverware at prestigious tournaments, and in doing so develop our squad professionally, personally and as players.
