On Monday 03 April the first three helicopters, Two Airbus H135’s and an Airbus H145, successfully arrived in Shropshire, to work towards the commencement of the UK Military Flying Training System (UKMFTS) rotary wing contract. The aircraft arrived into the home of military helicopter training, RAF Shawbury, where they will begin providing flying training to Navy, Army and RAF pilots and rear crew from April 2018. These aircraft will form the cornerstone of the UKMFTS rotary wing contract, giving student pilots and rear crew the first taste of military helicopter aviation.

The rotary wing contract was awarded by the MOD to Ascent who will design, deliver and manage military helicopter aircrew training service until the early 2030s. As well as helicopters, ascent will install new infrastructure and ground-based equipment at RAF Shawbury in Shropshire to train future aircrew to use aircraft such as Apache, Chinook, Merlin and Wildcat. It will also support a further 220 jobs, on top of the 280 already established by the UKMFTS; confirming that RAF Shawbury will remain one of the Core RAF Stations for years to come.
