FOUR Royal Air Force Physical Training instructors rowed for over 15 hours yesterday to raise funds for a charity that helped their colleague following a near-fatal parachute accident.

Yesterday at RAF Shawbury four members of the Stations Physical Education team undertook a mammoth rowing fundraiser in aid of charity. The event is scheduled to take place at every gymnasium staffed by Royal Air Force Physical Training Instructors. The aim of the challenge is to raise as much money as possible for The Barbera Bus Foundation who helped one of their colleagues following an accident which resulted in him sustaining life changing injuries.

Row For Rob

Starting at 5 am the team of 4 rowed continuously until they completed a total of 210.116 kilometres taking just over 15 hours to complete the challenge. You may find the distance unusual but this signifies the date that Corporal Robert Bugden, a serving Physical Training Instructor, suffered severe spinal injuries in a parachuting accident on 21st January 2016.. The Barbara Bus Foundation has been paramount over the last 12 months in supporting Rob’s recovery. They have provided transport on numerous occasions to allow Rob to leave the care of the hospital and experience days out, events and mini breaks to name a few. To hire transport large enough for Rob costs over £100 per day and they let him utilise their bus for free without any restrictions.

The team Corporals Chris Smith, Mike Barnes, Sherry Flanagan and Adam Roberts took turns to row the distance without a break. Personnel from RAF Shawbury turned up to support, cheer and cajole the team throughout the day. They are still awaiting the final sum raised on the day but their initial figure is just over £500. When asked how it felt to take part in this challenge Corporal Mike Barnes said: “It feels fantastic to not only help a great charity but Rob who is one of our own”.
