RAF Shawbury Serves up a Festive Feast for Local Senior Citizens

ON Tuesday 13th December, 87 senior residents from Shawbury Village and the surrounding area were thrilled to be invited to their local air base, RAF Shawbury for a traditional festive luncheon and a surprise visit from Father Christmas.

The lunch was held in the Officers’ Mess at RAF Shawbury and our local guests were served arrival drinks on entering the mess followed by a traditional Christmas lunch which was served by military, civilian and contractor personnel based at RAF Shawbury. The guests were formally welcomed by the Station Commander Group Captain Jason Appleton before the children of the St Peters School Choir from Wem performed a carol concert. The Padre, Reverend Wing Commander Alastair Bissell read a good humoured grace before the food was served.

Following the meal our guests had a surprise visit from Father Christmas who was able to pass on some fantastic treats from the complimentary prize draw. Some of the prizes had been kindly donated by a number of businesses in the local area; without the support of the Co-op in Shawbury, Shropshire Rural Housing Association, Tesco, Sainsbury’s, KFC ,McDonalds and the RAF Shawbury Officers’ Mess, our local senior residents would not have had been able to receive the wonderful treats and gifts.

The Station Commander, Group Captain Jason Appleton said: “It was wonderful to have been able to provide some festive cheer to some of our strongest supporters in the local community. Their good humour and community spirit shone through as they shared their memories of Shawbury over the years with the personnel who volunteered to serve their food and drink today. With the future of RAF Shawbury secure and 2017 marking 100 years of the existence of RAF Shawbury as a military station I look forward to welcoming our guests for years to come.”

The afternoon was a huge success and Sergeant Kerry Ritson who, with the help of Senior Aircraftman Jake Alder, organised the event, commented: “This afternoon was the culmination of 8 weeks planning; thanks must go to the ISS staff for their support throughout this period and for providing such excellent food and festive cheer on the day. Just seeing how much the local residents enjoyed the lunch made the all the work worthwhile for me; I received many comments thanking me for the enthusiasm of the volunteers who served them and they all loved the performance by the school choir. Lastly, thanks to our Master of Ceremonies, Master Aircrew Diable, whose entertaining and humorous commentary (and Christmas playlist) added to the enjoyment of the event.”
