RAF St Athan

RAF St Athan Voluntary Band

RAF St Athan Voluntary Band was formed in 1938 and, other than a short break during the Second World War, has been active throughout Wales and the West of England ever since. The Band supports all the traditional Royal Air Force engagements - parades, dinners, garden parties and charitable work, and also regularly supports the Welsh Football Association by performing the National Anthems at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff for all the home international football matches. The Band also adopts a conventional Brass Band configuration and as such enters national and local competitions, winning major prizes at the Royal National Eisteddfod of Wales on thirteen occasions and representing the Royal Air Force - and Wales - at the National Brass Band Championship Finals on six occasions; the Band is currently graded in the First Section. Supporting the Brass Band are training and beginner groups; a Dixieland jazz band; and High Winds - a specialist flute ensemble. During the past twelve months the Band has performed at an incredible ninety engagements to an estimated audience of nearly quarter of a million people.
