Age

  • 18 – 47 (Must attest before 48th birthday)

Nationality

Be a UK citizen or holder of dual UK/other nationality.

Whether or not you were born in the United Kingdom, you should have resided there for the 5 years immediately preceding your application. However, candidates with a minimum of 3 years will be considered.

Following the MOD announcement that the UK Armed Forces will now be able to recruit commonwealth citizens without the 5 year residency requirement, please note that the RAF continues to apply standard residency requirements for security clearance,  ie, DV employment requires 7-years UK residency immediately prior to enlistment; SC requires 3-years.

Qualifications

GCSE at Grade C (Grade 4 to 5 with effect from Aug 17) in English language and a GCSE at Grade G in Mathematics; or a SCE Standard Grade at Grade 2/Scottish National 5 in English and a SCE Standard Grade at Grade 6/Scottish National 4 in Mathematics.

All RAF ground trade recruits (except Air Traffic Controller – Senior Non-Commissioned Officer) must have or gain Functional Skills (FS) qualifications in English and Mathematics to graduate from Recruit Training. Your first chance to pass these tests, if you don’t already have the necessary FS grades, will be at the Pre-Recruit Training Course. The level of FS qualifications you need to achieve depend on the trade you are applying for; as, RAF Police, you will need to pass the Level 1 FS tests in Mathematics and English.

Even if you have other qualifications in Mathematics and English (like GCSE/SCEs), you will still have to take and pass the FS Mathematics and English tests. Further information will be available from your local Armed Forces Careers Office.

Additional requirement: You must have a Full UK driving licence.
