Step 1 Eligibility Check

Age

  • 16 - 47 (Must attest before 48th birthday)

If you’re under 18 years of age, you’ll need consent from a parent or guardian before you apply.

Nationality

You must be a citizen of the United Kingdom or the Republic of Ireland, holder of dual UK/other nationality or have been a Commonwealth Citizen since birth.

Whether or not you were born in the United Kingdom, you should have resided there for the 5 years immediately preceding your application. However, candidates with a minimum of 3 years will be considered.

Following the MOD announcement that the UK Armed Forces will now be able to recruit commonwealth citizens without the 5 year residency requirement, please note that the RAF continues to apply standard residency requirements for security clearance,  ie, DV employment requires 7-years UK residency immediately prior to enlistment; SC requires 3-years.

Qualifications

You need GCSEs at a minimum of Grade C (Grade 4 to 5) in English Language and Mathematics; or SCE Standard Grades at Grade 2 / Scottish National 5 (Grade A – C) in English and Mathematics. Waivers may be considered for professional qualifications and/or experience.

All RAF ground trade recruits (except Air Traffic Controller – Senior Non-Commissioned Officer) must have or gain Functional Skills (FS) qualifications in English and Mathematics to graduate from Recruit Training. Your first chance to pass these tests, if you do not already have the necessary FS grades, will be at the Pre-Recruit Training Course. Candidates / recruits for the trade of Personnel (Support) will need to achieve Level 2 in Mathematics and English unless they can prove that they already have these qualifications.

Even if you have other qualifications in Mathematics and English (like GCSE/SCEs), you will still have to take and pass the FS Mathematics and English tests.  Further information will be available from your local Armed Forces Careers Office.
