HOSPITALITY ROLES

RAF Hospitality work behind the scenes and front of house to make sure things run smoothly. As a member of the team, you will be trained in organisation and time management, learn excellent communication skills and whatever the task, you’ll need to stay calm under pressure.

In your role you will work to prepare and deliver meals in a whole host of environments; from Military Messes to field kitchens and on board aircraft. No two days will be the same. Do you have what it takes?

A Hospitality role in the RAF will take you all around the world from Military Messes to working on board an aircraft.

Chef
As an RAF Chef, you will be trained in all aspects of running a kitchen. From cooking first-class food at events and working in the Sergeant’s Mess, you will learn a whole host of culinary skills. Once fully trained you will be prepared to deal with anything. You will have the opportunity to work in locations around the world and even cook for VIPs and members of the Royal Family.

Air & Ground Steward
As an RAF Air & Ground Steward, no two days will be the same. From working in a field kitchen supporting exercises to out on operations worldwide. You will have a whole host of opportunities to explore. You might find yourself working on the Royal Air Force’s flagship aircraft “Voyager”, or volunteering in our VIP Team, or even working for high-ranking Officers who entertain Government Ministers and members of the Royal Family.

What qualifications do I need for Hospitality roles?

TO APPLY FOR A HOSPITALITY ROLE YOU NEED TO:

  • Be aged between 16 and 47 *
  • Qualification requirements are dependent on the exact role and whether you wish to enter the role as a qualified or unqualified personnel. For roles such as an unqualified Chef, no formal educational qualifications are required, however other roles may differ. Individual requirements can be found on the specific role pages.
  • Be a citizen of the United Kingdom or the Republic of Ireland, or holder of dual UK/other nationality or have been a Commonwealth citizen since birth.
  • Additionally, whether or not you were born in the UK, you should reside here for 5 years immediately preceding your application (candidates with a minimum of 3 years will be considered).

*You must be aged between 17.5 and 47 for an Air & Ground Steward role

Do I need to be physically fit for Hospitality roles?

  • Every person in the RAF is required to maintain a level of fitness to complete both initial and specialist training, and to do their role effectively. The exact fitness requirements will depend on your role, age and gender. *

  • Fitness is a key part of RAF life – with all the clubs and sports you can get involved with on a wide variety of levels, from occasional fun to Olympic competition.

*Additionally, all candidates for the Air and Ground Steward role must be able to swim.

Where will I be based?

RAF Hospitality personnel work on RAF bases all over the UK and abroad. Where you will be exactly is dependent on your role and what each base currently requires. Speak with your local AFCO for more information.
