At the RAF we offer outstanding training opportunities to all our recruits. When you join, your first steps will be learning to live and work as part of the RAF team. Whatever role you choose, trainees gain professional skills and qualifications. Many trades offer the chance to gain an apprenticeship, which is a leading civilian-recognised qualification.
Whether you’re joining at Officer level or as an Airman/Airwoman, your Initial Training will cover topics such as living and working in the RAF, our history and culture, weapon handling and survival techniques. Depending on your level, this could last either 10 or 24 weeks and be held at a training base like RAF Cranwell in Lincolnshire or RAF Halton in Buckinghamshire.
After you’ve completed your initial training, you will begin your specialist training. Where you go and how long it lasts will depend on your job. However, as well as technical skills, you will get on-the-job experience – often at a much earlier stage than you would as a civilian. The training, and your experience, will form the foundation of an advanced apprenticeship and other useful qualifications.
Fitness in the RAF is important. We are always on the move, whether operating in combat zones or on peaceful missions and we have to be ready for anything.
Before you’re accepted into the RAF you’ll have to pass either two or three fitness tests, depending on the role you apply for. If you don’t pass the pre-joining fitness test you will not be able to apply for your chosen role.
