Cpl Shaun Kelly (Armourer)

2017 Circus 2 Blues Age – 35

Education -Shaun took his GCSE’s at Garibaldi Comprehensive School in Mansfield, Nottinghamshire and studied A levels at the school’s sixth form college before completing an Apprenticeship in Aeronautical Engineering at RAF Cosford..

Career –He joined the RAF in April 2001 as a Weapons Technician and upon completion of basic and trade training courses was posted to II (AC) Squadron working on the Tornado GR4 aircraft at RAF Marham. During this time he deployed to Kuwait and Qatar and participated in various exercises in the USA, Canada and Europe.

After three busy years he was then posted to the newly formed 29 (R) Squadron at RAF Coningsby in 2005 where he was involved in bringing the Typhoon aircraft into service. He was part of the team which deployed the Typhoon to the Falkland Islands which at the time was one of the largest peacetime logistical missions of its kind.

In 2010, on promotion to Corporal, he was posted to 3 (F) Sqn, a frontline operational Typhoon Squadron whose responsibilities include maintaining the United Kingdom’s Quick Reaction Alert (QRA) air defence capability. Whilst on the Squadron he deployed on various multi-national exercises to countries as diverse as Malaysia, UAE, Oman, Italy and The Netherlands.

Shaun joined the Red Arrows in March 2014 and has been part of the team for the past two display seasons operating with the road support team at various locations throughout the UK. Shaun also deployed to China, India, Thailand and Singapore on the Asia Pacific and Middle East Tour 2016.

Background - Shaun lives with his girlfriend Sarah in Mansfield. In his spare time he likes to keep busy and his interests include photography, travel and live music. When the time allows he enjoys a long walk in the Peak District especially ones that end at a pub!
