Tain Air Weapons Range

Located on the Dornoch Firth, Tain Air Weapons Range (AWR) is one of 5 currently used by the RAF for essential operational training.  Tain AWR is also responsible for Cape Wrath Range near the village of Durness.  The current Tain AWR boundary covers an area of 2700 acres extending from the beach at the village of Inver to the edge of the wood 3 miles East of Tain town.  The Air Danger Area – EG D703, extends vertically to 15000 feet above mean sea level (AMSL) or 22000 feet AMSL on request.  The range, which is operated by the Defence Infrastructure Organisation, is used by British military as well as the US Air Force and other NATO air forces for academic bombing and strafing practice.  It has 18 separate targets suitable for a variety of weapons and different delivery methods including a moving target and a CAS Village.  Further details about access and opening times are published on gov.uk at the earliest opportunity.  Tain AWR is a site of special scientific interest due to the rare orchids that are only found in this location, and unsurprisingly provides a haven for wildlife.  The sands and marshes are an ideal habitat for flora and fauna which remain largely undisturbed by the public.
