Air Ambulance Week commences on the 6th September 2021.  The RAF are proud to support and help raise awareness of the vital work air ambulance charities deliver in lifesaving pre-hospital care during a medical emergency.

Most air ambulance charities across the UK are taking part, to spread the message that ‘Every Second Counts and Every Penny Matters’ when saving the lives of patients in medical emergencies.

Every Second Counts

Advanced pre-hospital care improves the chance of survival and  patient outcome for people with a life-threatening injury or illness.  There is not always time to move a patient to a hospital. Often, medical attention is urgently required at the scene.

Air ambulance Critical Care Teams are among some of the most highly skilled pre-hospital doctors and paramedics in the world.  They can perform lifesaving procedures before patients reach the hospital; from general anaesthetics to open-heart surgery.

Every Penny Matters

There are 21 Helicopter Emergency Medical Service air ambulance charities operating 37 air ambulance helicopters across the UK, forming a vital part of the UK’s frontline emergency services.  They collectively make on average around 80 lifesaving missions every day.  Each air ambulance mission costs on average between £2500 - £3500.

Air ambulances charities are funded almost entirely by donations and so it is essential to raise awareness of their lifesaving work to help provide the vital funding that will enable them to save even more lives ever day across the UK.
