Every year, pupils from Wittering Primary School design the Station’s official Christmas card. The card is sent to RAF personnel working across the world, friends of Royal Air Force Wittering and even members of the Royal Family.

The winning design is kept a complete secret; only a few key personnel and the Headteacher’s team at Wittering Primary School know which pupil created the winning design. Under normal circumstances, the award would be made at a special assembly. This year, the coronavirus pandemic meant that the Station Commander, Group Captain Jo Lincoln, could only attend virtually.

Rhys Thrower is the Headteacher at Wittering Primary School. He said: “Despite everything that’s happened this year, the children have produced some amazing designs, the children have done us proud. I’m so glad I didn’t have to choose the winner. Every single design this year was cheerful and happy, it’s a wonderful way to bring the school year to a close.”

Gabriella McAulay’s colourful and merry design features almost every element of the traditional family Christmas, and a tribute to the NHS. A tree with candy canes, presents, Christmas dinner around a table, decorations and pets – it has almost everything.

Group Captain Lincoln said: “Gabriella has designed an absolutely beautiful card, full of colour and clearly celebrating Christmas at home. Choosing the winning Christmas card is a huge privilege but, with so many stunning designs, it’s also a challenge to choose the right design to be sent to our deployed personnel and their families.”

She concluded: “The children of Wittering Primary School are wonderfully creative, and the school is a massive part of our Station community. Merry Christmas and a big thank you to every pupil for their work in producing their amazing designs.”
