Flt Lt Theresa Russell, a Cadet Forces Adult Volunteer (CFAV), served as one of the two escorting officers on the 2023 International Air Cadet Exchange (IACE) to Canada. Accompanying 10 UK cadets, she took part in a two-week adventure funded by the Air Cadet Charity.
The IACE program provides a unique opportunity to build international friendships, expand aviation knowledge, and create unforgettable experiences for both cadets and staff. The group visited Montreal, Quebec, and Ottawa, where they were hosted by Canadian officers and cadets who organized a packed itinerary of exciting activities, historical tours, and invaluable experiences. This is an account of their extraordinary journey through Canada.
Arrival and immersive aviation experiences in Montreal
After a smooth flight with Air Canada, our group landed in Montreal and immediately began our exciting exploration of the city. Upon arrival, the cadets had a chance to sit in the cockpit and chat with the female captain of our flight, learning about her experiences as a cadet. It was a unique and inspiring start to the trip. We then headed straight into the heart of aviation with a visit to the Pratt & Whitney Canadian Flight Test Centre, where we got to explore the 747SD FTB4 and meet with flight test pilots who shared their expertise and experiences.
One of the most thrilling moments of the trip came when we flew aboard a Griffin Helicopter with the 438 'Wildcats' Tactical Helicopter Squadron. The flight was nothing short of incredible, offering the cadets a hands-on experience of military aviation. In addition to our aviation activities, we toured the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) headquarters, where we participated in a mock commissioners meeting led by Fredric Fachinan, the first Vice President of the Air Navigation Commission.
Exploring Montreal and cultural adventures
Our time in Montreal was full of cultural exploration and exciting activities. The cadets had the opportunity to visit the Bell Centre, home of the Montreal Canadiens, for a backstage tour that provided a glimpse behind the scenes of one of Canada's most iconic sports teams. They also had a blast riding the Montreal Ferris Wheel and exploring downtown Montreal.
One of the more unusual activities we enjoyed was learning how to play pickleball. We also took part in glow-in-the-dark mini golf before spending time hiking up Mount Royal, where we were treated to stunning views of the city. A walking tour of Montreal’s fascinating underground city added a unique touch to our exploration.
Quebec City: A historic adventure
Next, we ventured to Quebec City, where we stopped off at Village Vacances Valcartier Water Park for a refreshing afternoon of fun. Quebec City itself offered a wealth of history, as we delved into the Seven Years' War with a captivating lesson from Captain Kendall. We visited The Plains of Abraham, the site of a pivotal battle in Canadian history, and embarked on a ghost tour of the old city, where we learned more about the region's storied past.
Another highlight in Quebec was our visit to La Citadelle de Quebec, a stunning fortress that overlooks the city. The cadets also had the chance to visit CTC Valcartier, where they joined local cadets for a summer camp air rifle shooting session, making new friends and forging lasting connections.
Ottawa: Discovering Canadian history and government
Our final destination was Ottawa, where we embarked on a relaxing river cruise that provided scenic views of the city. We then visited Parliament Hill and the Senate, where the cadets learned about Canada’s political system and had the chance to witness the workings of the country’s government.
The Canadian War Museum and Canadian History Museum were awe-inspiring, offering an in-depth look at Canada’s military history and cultural heritage. We wrapped up our time in Ottawa with some much-needed free time, allowing the cadets to explore the city and reflect on the experiences they’d had during the trip.
A journey of friendship, learning and memories
Our two weeks in Canada were an unforgettable adventure. From aviation experiences to historical tours, each day was filled with excitement, discovery, and new friendships. We were fortunate to be supported by Major Benoit Lecours, Captain Nathan Kendall, Lieutenant Marc-Antoine Gendron, and Corporal Gabriel Fiset, whose expert organisation made this exchange truly exceptional. The cadets learned valuable lessons about aviation, history, and cultural exchange while creating memories that will last a lifetime. The trip was an incredible opportunity for growth and connection, and I can’t wait to see how the experiences will shape the cadets' future endeavours.
