More than 300 Air Cadets from across Bedfordshire and Cambridgeshire Wing assembled at the iconic Ely Cathedral on Sunday 10 May for the annual Wing Parade, this year celebrating the 85th anniversary of the Air Training Corps.
Set within the striking surroundings of the historic cathedral, cadets, volunteers and invited guests came together for a formal service recognising the tradition, service, values and enduring legacy of the RAF Air Cadets. A full representation of squadron banners was proudly displayed, adding colour, heritage, and a strong visual reminder of the Wing’s unity and identity.
The scale of the event reflected the importance of the milestone, with transport arranged from across the Wing to enable widespread participation. Coaches brought cadets from all four corners of Bedfordshire and Cambridgeshire, ensuring strong representation from local squadrons.
The experience made a lasting impression on those involved. A cadet from 1985 (Flitwick) Squadron said:
“It made me proud to be part of a larger celebration like this. It was great to be together with so many other cadets.”
Music played a key role in the service, with the Wing Band providing a fitting accompaniment within the Cathedral’s unique acoustic setting. A cadet from 2500 (St Neots) Squadron added:
“This was such a fantastic place to hold the service. I loved playing here in the Wing Band.”
The event also welcomed a number of distinguished guests. Reviewing Officers from the Lieutenancies of Bedfordshire and Cambridgeshire were in attendance, including former Commandant Air Cadets, Air Commodore Gordon Moulds. The Wing was also honoured to host its Regional Commandant and representatives from its parent RAF stations, underlining the strong links between the RAF Air Cadets and the wider Royal Air Force community.
The parade formed part of national celebrations marking 85 years of the Air Training Corps, providing an opportunity to reflect on its proud history while recognising the commitment and achievements of today’s cadets.
