On Sunday 1 September 2024, 612 Volunteer Gliding Squadron (VGS) flew their first cadet from RAF Little Rissington.
Previously flying from Abingdon Airfield until 2014, 612 VGS is now delivering RAF Air Cadet gliding opportunities, ranging from initial gliding induction flights through to Gliding Scholarships and advanced gliding training.
Bringing together volunteers from 621 and 637 Volunteer Gliding Squadrons, the stand-up of 612 VGS will ensure the continued success of gliding at RAF Little Rissington.
Attending the day, Commandant 2 Flying Training School, Group Captain Baz Dale said “I was delighted to be able to re-present to the current Officer Commanding, Squadron Leader Phil Woods RAFAC, the official painting of the 612 VGS badge, approved by the College of Arms in May 2007. This tangible symbol represents a long and successful history of delivering the Air Cadet gliding experience, and I look forward to their continuing support in the future.”

The day was business as usual for the Gliding Squadron, with visiting cadets from Air Cadet Squadrons in Llwchr, Bridgend, Pontardawe and Pencoed experiencing their first flight in a Viking glider. The cadets and volunteers have been able to make use of the newly expanded facilities at RAF Little Rissington, with onsite accommodation and catering.
