New 30 by 30 initiative to boost cadet numbers launched at Air and Space Camp

The RAF Air Cadets’ National Air and Space Camp at Syerston played host to a significant announcement today as the Minister for Veterans and People, Alistair Carns, unveiled a new, government-backed initiative to dramatically expand the UK's cadet forces. The "30 by 30" campaign, supported by £70 million in new investment, aims to increase the number of cadets by 30%, or over 40,000, by the year 2030.

The Minister's visit highlighted the critical role of organisations like the RAF Air Cadets in developing the next generation of leaders. During his time at the camp, Minister Carns observed cadets participating in spectacular flying displays and saw firsthand how the organisation is embracing modern technology. A key feature of the new initiative is the introduction of a Civilian Aviation Authority-endorsed drone pilot qualification, which the RAF Air Cadets will be the first military youth organisation in Britain to deliver.

This landmark investment, which delivers on the Government's Strategic Defence Review, will help to break down barriers to opportunity and ensure that young people from all walks of life have the chance to develop vital skills. The cadet experience has been shown to improve school attendance, behaviour, and progression to higher education or employment, with an even more pronounced impact on young people from disadvantaged backgrounds.

The funding will be used to enhance existing programs and introduce new opportunities, including advanced STEM skills and cyber training, with hands-on experience using cutting-edge drone and submersible technology. It will also support the recruitment of more adult volunteers and the construction of new joint cadet centres across the country.

The "30 by 30" drive underscores the government's recognition of the immense value that the cadet forces provide to both young people and society as a whole, preparing them with confidence, skills, and a sense of purpose for their future careers.

Minister for Veterans and People, Alistair Carns MP, said:

"Every young person deserves the chance to discover their potential, regardless of their postcode or family income.

The cadet experience doesn’t just build character – it transforms futures, helping young people build confidence, develop skills and meet new people.

The government is kickstarting a new era for the cadets through this major expansion, backed by £70 million of extra funding."
