VIP visit for 621 Aerospace Ground School

Commodore Steve Bolton, Deputy Director Aviation Programmes and Futures at the Royal Navy, recently visited 621 Aerospace Ground School at MOD Boscombe Down to observe the innovative training being delivered to cadets and to engage with the Cadet Forces Adult Volunteers (CFAVs) helping to shape the next generation of aviation talent.

The visit provided an opportunity to showcase the impact of the Aerospace Ground School network and the important role it plays within the Royal Air Force Air Cadets. Throughout the day, Commodore Bolton met with cadets and staff, gaining first-hand insight into how immersive ground-based training is enhancing the cadet experience and supporting their development within the wider Defence aviation training pathway.

During the visit, Commodore Bolton observed elements of the Bronze Ground Based Training (GBT) course and spoke directly with cadets taking part in the programme. Bronze GBT introduces cadets to the fundamentals of aviation operations and ground-based roles, helping them understand how complex air operations are supported from the ground. The course forms an important part of the Aerospace Ground School training pathway, providing cadets with valuable knowledge of aviation operations while developing teamwork, leadership and problem-solving skills.

The visit also highlighted the leadership and collaboration that underpin the programme. Training at 621 AGS is delivered by a dedicated team of instructors, with Wing Commander Marland Green, Ground Based Training Lead and Officer Commanding Immersive Technologies, overseeing the development and delivery of the course. Strategic leadership across the Aerospace Ground School network is provided by Wing Commander Colin Haynes, Head of the AGS network, whose work continues to strengthen the integration of ground-based aviation training within the cadet experience.

A key moment of the visit was the presentation of Bronze Wings to cadets who had successfully completed the Bronze Ground Based Training course. The award recognises their hard work and commitment, marking an important milestone in their Defence aviation journey while celebrating the achievements of the cadets and the support provided by the instructors who guide them through the course.

Alongside the formal programme, the visit also included an informal fireside chat with staff. This relaxed setting provided an opportunity for open conversation, allowing the Commodore and staff to share their various aviation experiences, discuss challenges and exchange ideas for the continued development of Aerospace Ground School training.

Visits like this play an important role in strengthening collaboration across the Armed Services, and showcase the work of dedicated volunteers who inspire the next generation of aviation talent.
