Work starts on new gliding facilities

At a turf-cutting ceremony on Monday October 7 2022, the ground was dug to signal the start of an exciting new construction project at historic RAF Little Rissington in Gloucestershire.

A multi-million pound accommodation block is to be built at the site, as well as enhanced facilities to support 621 Volunteer Gliding Squadron (VGS). The unit moved to their new home at RAF Little Rissington in 2016, where they have been operating alongside 637 Volunteer Gliding Squadron, as part of a strategy to create dedicated gliding hubs across the UK.

Work has already started on the foundations for the new 32-bed Single Living Accommodation, and attention has now turned to the extension of the operations building. This will provide a new crew room, additional locker room and shower facility for the personnel who work there.

Ultimately, these new facilities will provide a modern and safe environment to learn about, and experience elements of, the RAF which may in turn ignite the passion to become the RAF of tomorrow.

The new facilities are expected to complete and ready for use in October 2023.
