This two-week exchange to Belgium was an extraordinary adventure that offered a perfect blend of aviation experiences, historical reflections, and cultural exploration.
From gliding over picturesque landscapes to immersing ourselves in Belgium’s rich history, every day brought something new and unforgettable. Alongside amazing opportunities to learn about the Belgian military and aviation systems, we also had the chance to explore beautiful cities, meet incredible people, and create memories that will last a lifetime. Here’s a glimpse into the journey that made it all possible.
Day 1: Arrival in Belgium
We arrived at Brussels Airport and were greeted by Alex, a friendly escort who had previously taken part in IACE ’23 to the UK. It was a mini reunion for Alex and CWO Knight, who had worked together on the UK exchange, and their joyful catch-up set the tone for the trip. The weather was 28°C, a delightful contrast to the drizzly UK. After a brief introduction to the Belgian Military Academy, which trains Belgium’s armed forces officers, we met the other cadets and settled into our new surroundings. In the evening, we explored Brussels City Centre and enjoyed an all-you-can-eat ribs buffet, a delicious way to start our Belgian adventure.
Day 2: Tradition and aviation
The day began with a coach trip to the coast, where we witnessed the unique sight of shrimp fishermen riding horseback along the beach. It was fascinating to experience such a deeply rooted tradition in Belgium. In the afternoon, we visited Koksijde Air Base, where we toured the Search and Rescue Squadron and explored their helicopters. Afterward, we headed to the beach for a thrilling adaptation of capture the flag on the sand dunes, soaking up the beautiful weather and enjoying an unforgettable bonding experience.
Day 3: Reflecting on the past
We dedicated this day to reflecting on World War I history. Our guide was incredibly knowledgeable, and his storytelling brought the history to life as we visited various memorials and grave sites in Ypres. One of the most poignant moments was at Hill 60, where craters and bunker posts still remain from the war. In the evening, we took part in the moving Last Post ceremony at Menin Gate, a tribute to those who had fallen. CWO Singh read the Ode of Remembrance, and CWO Knight laid a wreath in honor of the soldiers.

Day 4: Flight simulators and helicopters
At Beauvechain Airbase, we kicked off the day with an incredible opportunity to try flight simulators. The cadets had a chance to experience both the Belgian Air Force’s elementary flying training aircraft and the F35, with CWO Knight setting the highest score for the F35 simulator among all IACE cadets. We also visited the NH90 Squadron and, in a remarkable turn of events, had the chance to fly on the NH90 helicopter—an experience the cadets described as one of the best of their lives. In the evening, we met our host families, who took us to explore more of Belgium.

Days 5 and 6: Exploring Belgium
CWO Knight spent the day flying over North Belgium in a Piper Aircraft with his host family, enjoying the scenic views. He later explored Brussels City Centre, taking in the culture and cuisine. CWO Singh visited the Euro Space Centre to learn about space projects, then enjoyed the shops and local festival in Leuven. FS Summerfield explored Brussels’ main attractions and historic buildings.
CWO Singh visited the stunning Atomium in Brussels, soaking in the views and enjoying a meal at the top. FS Summerfield had a cultural day, attending an art expo and even going on a Porsche ride with his host family. CWO Knight spent the day in Dinant, exploring the Citadelle de Dinant, a fortress overlooking the river Meuse. After the tour, he joined another IACE cadet and their host families for dinner.

Day 7: History and gliding
We started the day at the Bastogne War Museum, which provided a compelling look at civilian life during World War I. In the afternoon, we traveled to Bertrix Airfield, where we had the chance to go gliding with the Belgian Air Cadets. After a competitive game of football, we wrapped up the day with a fun BBQ.

Days 8 and 9: Luxembourg adventure
We took a mini-trip to Luxembourg, starting with a visit to Vianden Castle, where we learned about the history of the region. In the evening, we visited the Luxembourg Flight Training Academy and enjoyed a BBQ with the Young Pilots of Luxembourg. We even had the chance to use a professional flight simulator.
On our second day in Luxembourg, we visited the tunnels running through the city, once a strategic point in battles. The highlight was a visit to Sven Clement, an MP for Piratepartei Letzebuerg, who gave us a tour of the Luxembourg Parliament and shared insights into the country’s political history.

Day 10: Kayaking and bowling
Today was all about adventure and teamwork as we kayaked along the river to Dinant, covering a 21km course. The stunning views made the journey even more memorable. In the evening, we enjoyed a wonderful dinner with the sponsors of the Belgian Exchange and later had a competitive bowling session to wind down.

Day 11: Military demonstrations and F-16s
We spent the day at Kleine Brogel Air Base, a nuclear air base in northeastern Belgium. We toured the F-16 maintenance area, where jets were prepped for the Belgian National Day flyover, and visited the EOD Unit, where we saw controlled demolitions of explosives. We also had a K9 Unit demonstration, learning about the dogs' capabilities.
Days 12 and 13: Host family fun
CWO Knight spent the day hiking in the Belgian countryside and learned about the country’s brewing history. In the evening, he traveled to Bruges to watch a Club Brugge football match. CWO Singh explored Brussels’ sights and landmarks, while FS Summerfield tried his first taste of Belgian mussels in Brussels.
CWO Singh visited the National Botanical Gardens in Brussels and explored its different biomes. CWO Knight enjoyed the Belgian National Day celebrations in Brussels, watching the parade, flypast, and exhibitions. FS Summerfield also took part in the festivities. In the evening, we joined the local celebrations in Beauvechain.
Day 14: Gliding and formal dinner
We visited Weelde Air Base for a second gliding session, where we learned about the winch launch system used to get the gliders airborne. In the evening, we enjoyed a formal dinner with distinguished guests, celebrating the end of an unforgettable two weeks in Belgium.
This exchange has been one of the most memorable experiences of my life. From gliding and flight simulators to historical reflections and cultural adventures, every moment was filled with new learning and incredible friendships. I’ll cherish these memories for a lifetime.
