A journey to the UK: An International Air Cadet Exchange experience

In the summer of 2024, forty cadets from around the world participated in the International Air Cadet Exchange (IACE) Programme, hosted in the United Kingdom. Cadets from eight countries – Australia, Belgium, Canada, France, Germany, Sweden, the USA, and the UK – gathered for an action-packed two-week adventure.

The programme, designed to foster international friendships, promote cultural exchange, and deepen aviation knowledge, proved to be an unforgettable experience for all involved.

Here is a first-hand account from Garret Andrews, a cadet from the United States and a member of the Civil Air Patrol Cadet Programme.

Arrival and settling in

The exchange began with the cadets arriving at Heathrow Airport. The Australian cadets were the first to land and spent their first night at RAF Northolt before joining the rest of the group. The cadets and their ten supporting staff then traveled to RAF Wittering, which served as their base for the duration of the trip. From here, they embarked on a series of exciting visits and activities.

Building connections and teamwork

One of the most memorable aspects for me was meeting cadets from other countries. Being able to see how other countries’ militaries worked and experiencing their cultures was an awesome opportunity. The initial days included icebreakers, games, and team-building exercises, including a high ropes course at RAF Cranwell.

The ropes course was both challenging and fun. It involved trust and teamwork, like the exercise where four people climbed a pole, stood on a small platform, and leaned back while holding each other’s hands. It was a great way to bond with the group.

Exciting aviation experiences

The programme offered numerous aviation-related activities, such as flying at RAF Cranwell and visiting the Eurofighter hangar.

This was my first time flying acrobatic manoeuvres, and it was an incredible experience. As a licensed pilot in the US, it gave me a new perspective on a type of flying that most beginner pilots don’t get to experience.

At the Royal International Air Tattoo (RIAT), we toured various aircraft, met a USAF four-star general, and even explored a German helicopter. I was amazed by the sheer number of aircraft on display. It’s not every day you get to see that many planes in one place.

Exploring UK history and culture

We had opportunities to delve into the UK’s rich history. Visits included the Tower of London, Houses of Parliament, and Burghley House. Reflecting on the historical significance of the sites, I realised that in the States, we don’t have anywhere near the same amount of history. Walking through buildings that are centuries old was a humbling experience.

At the Tower of London, I explored the Beefeater tour, battlements, royal quarters, and the White Tower museum. We also attended cultural events like the Battle of the Proms, which impressed even those of us who missed our own Independence Day celebrations back home.

Hands-on adventure activities

The programme included outdoor activities such as kayaking, archery, and raft building at Adventure Nene. Our raft fell apart before it even touched the water, but it was still a lot of fun. The teamwork and laughter made it one of the most enjoyable parts of the trip.

A farewell to remember

The trip concluded with a formal dinner at the RAF Club in London, where we received our participation certificates. It was a wonderful way to end the exchange. Afterwards, we traded souvenirs and signatures with our new friends, celebrating the bonds we’d formed over the two weeks.

Reflections from other participants

CWOFF (Cadet Warrant Officer) AAFC (Australian Air Force Cadets):
“Adventure Nene was a highlight for me. The raft building was especially fun—our raft capsized, but that only made it more enjoyable! It was incredible to see the different leadership styles and teamwork from cadets of many countries.”

Sofia Heed (Swedish Air Force Voluntary):
“Flying an airplane for the first time and doing loops was exhilarating! The airshow at RIAT was another highlight, especially meeting Gripen pilots and seeing the aircraft up close. The trip was the perfect mix of adventure, learning, and making lifelong friends.”

Plt Off Saffron Ferreira (UK):
“As a former IACE participant, I can confidently say this is the best cadet activity I’ve ever taken part in. This year, as a Conducting Officer, my highlights included the Air Tattoo, plane spotting, and seeing cadets thrive through the experiences we provided. It’s a programme I’ll cherish for years to come.”
