It all really started at Drill and Ceremonial Camp in 2021. That was my first real taste of what it meant to be part of something bigger. I remember walking in nervous and not knowing what to expect. But that camp pushed me. I gained confidence and learned lessons I’ve carried ever since. Looking back, it set the stage for everything else, the skills I picked up there became the foundation for everything I’ve gone on to do.
That passion for drill continued throughout my cadet career and eventually led to me taking charge of my squadron at our wing Drill Competition at RAF Marham. Having the opportunity to lead and support the team in such a high-standard environment was an incredible experience and showed me how much I had developed since first attending drill camps. I was privileged to be awarded Best Drill NCO across the whole wing, which was an achievement I am incredibly proud of.
Since that first camp, Air Cadets has kept throwing doors open. One big step was Halton Summer Camp. That experience was huge for me, it was my first time leading a team and really relying on myself. I made friends with people from all over, and the memories from that camp still make me smile. After that came Camp Viking adventure training camp, which was a whole new set of challenges. It took me outside my comfort zone, and showed me how much I’m capable of if I just try.
I’m probably proudest of getting my Gold DofE Award. That wasn’t easy, it took real commitment, patience, and the willingness to keep going when I wanted to give up. I learned a lot about teamwork and what it takes to really grow, and finishing that challenge felt incredible.
My Highlight
I used my solo flight for my Private Pilot Licence training as a chance to give back, organizing a fundraiser for Beccles Air Cadets. I aimed for £850 and ended up raising £1,200, thanks to the amazing support from others.
That fundraising opened the door to something I never saw coming. The Red Arrows recognized me and invited me as a VIP guest for the opening of their Diamond Display Season. I got to speak on the radio three times and feature on Lincolnshire Live, which let me share my story and encourage others to try Air Cadets, too. A year later, they invited me back to RAF Waddington for work experience with the Red Arrows, another moment I’ll never forget.
Air Cadets really has changed my life. It’s pushed me in ways I never expected, helped me become a leader, meet people who matter, and make memories I’ll hold onto forever. Each challenge, camp, or new experience has made me who I am, and I’m looking forward to whatever’s next
