History of the Shadow R Mk1

Originally a Beechcraft product, the King Air has evolved through various ownerships and is now part of Textron Aviation. The King Air 350, a more advanced version, was chosen as a special missions platform to address the urgent need for improved intelligence gathering in Afghanistan.

In response, the Ministry of Defence ordered four Shadow R Mk1 aircraft based on the King Air 350CER under an Urgent Operational Requirement. Delivered to the RAF in 2009 and operated by 5 (AC) Squadron, the Shadow is equipped with an electro-optical sensor turret, integrated sensors, and extensive communications managed from onboard operator consoles.

In 2011, 5 (AC) Squadron’s Shadow Flight became 14 Squadron after restructuring under the 2010 Strategic Defence and Security Review. The Shadow program transitioned from an urgent requirement to the MOD's core Equipment Programme in 2015.
