The NAAFI Fund: awarding grants of up to £20,000 to improve quality of life on Armed Forces bases, stations and units for serving personnel and their families
The Fund will run for a minimum of 10 years and will be run as a rolling programme. Full guidance is available at www.covenantfund.org.uk or by clicking on the image below.
The NAAFI Fund will fund projects that enhance welfare and improve quality of life for serving personnel and their families living on or near Armed Forces bases. In the first year of the NAAFI Fund, applications are being encouraged for projects or activities that help to bring people together on the unit and help reduce boredom or isolation.
This year, you can apply for a grant of between £5,000 and £20,000.
Grants can be used to refurbish spaces or purchase equipment. You can also use grants for staff costs or fees, but you should be able to show us how an activity would be sustained at the end of the grant period if there is an ongoing need.
What can be funded?
The types of projects that the NAAFI Fund may support in 2020/21 are:
• Creating games rooms with pool tables or electronic gaming equipment that could be used as a recreational space by serving personnel in single living accommodation
• Refurbishing recreational spaces to make them more comfortable for serving personnel
• Providing a bank of mountain bikes that can be loaned out for serving personnel and families to explore the local countryside
• Improving play equipment for children from Armed Forces families
This list is however, not exhaustive. If the idea will
1. Help serving personnel and/or their families living on or near an Armed Forces unit, and
2. Will reduce isolation or boredom, or improve quality of life in some other way; and
3. The project will cost £20,000 or less; and
4. The applicant is the Armed Forces unit
Then it is likely that the idea will be eligible.
How to apply
There is a two stage process. To help you check that your project idea broadly fits this programme, (before you spend time on completing a full application), you need to send a short (maximum 50 word summary) to [email protected] before 23 October 2020. There is information on what to include in your email in the programme guidance.
Following this, if your idea broadly fits with the NAAFI Fund programme then you will be given a unique code and the link to the online application form.
To be considered in this first round, the application needs to be submitted by 23rd November 2020. Applicants will receive a decision in March 2021.
