Corporal (Cpl) Young of the Central Band of the Royal Air Force will be purchasing a trophy cabinet extension following their performances both on and off the ice in the recent RAF Ice Hockey Championships!
Last year’s Champs began with a ‘Trade Tournament’ and not only did Cpl Young help lead a team from the Logistics profession to an early victory, they were part of the overall winning team, RAF Bluewings. The team, coached by Cpl Young, represents players from Stations across the South of England and was absolutely thrilled to bring home the RAF Ice Hockey Championships Trophy following a 6-3 win against the RAF Lossiemouth Jets. The competition was fierce and emotions were running high, especially as a high proportion of the players also play for the RAF representative team, the RAF Aces.
Cpl Young's performance both on the ice and as the team’s head coach earned them the ‘Best Defence Player’ of the Champs.
Additionally, Cpl Young was nominated unanimously for the prestigious Rhagor Trophy, recognised for offering the greatest contribution, dedication and commitment to the RAF Ice Hockey Association over the past year. This included Cpl Young's contributions as Deputy Treasurer, leading the Association to financial security, and their unwavering commitment to developing, coaching and inspiring players at all levels.
Whilst Cpl Young sadly leaves the RAF later this year to return to his homeland Canada, the entire Association are grateful for the outstanding legacy that they have left. On their presentation, acting Deputy Chairman of the Association, Flight Lieutenant Yeoman said:
"I believe this individual is a very worthy recipient of the prestigious Rhagor Trophy, and when they leave us at the end of next year to go back home to the land of hockey, their absence will leave a big gap within the Association and I think it’s fair to say will be missed by us all."
