Air Chief Marshal (ACM) Sir Rich Knighton, Chief of the Air Staff, delivered the annual Lord Trenchard Memorial Lecture at the Royal United Services Institute for Defence and Security Studies in London on Remembrance Day.

ACM Sir Rich Knighton used his first Trenchard Memorial Speech as Chief of Air Staff to focus on the importance of both deterrence and defence in a dangerous and volatile age.

He outlined how the RAF is having to evolve in order to counter the threats of today, which are significantly different than those the RAF faced in 2019, when he last delivered the Trenchard Memorial Speech.

ACM Knighton turned to the situation in Ukraine to illustrate and reinforce the importance of air power as both a deterrent and a key aspect of defence when deterrence no longer prevents an attack.
