First UK P-8A Poseidon Flies to the North Pole

A crew from 42 (Torpedo Bomber) Squadron has marked a significant achievement by flying the first UK P-8A Poseidon (Poseidon) mission to the North Pole, demonstrating the aircraft’s capability and operational reach. This milestone was achieved during the first Poseidon Qualified Weapons Instructor Course (QWIC) as part of Exercise Midnight Warrior.

Deployed to Evenes Air Base in Norway, the course brought together RAF personnel and allied aircrews from Norway, Germany, and The Netherlands to conduct demanding operational sorties and tactical assessments. This joint training environment provided an invaluable opportunity to sharpen skills and integrate with NATO partners.

Operating in extreme cold, Poseidon crews faced challenging navigation and environmental conditions, pushing the aircraft and aircrew to new limits. The flight to the North Pole showcased the Poseidon’s ability to operate effectively in the High North, extending the RAF’s maritime patrol reach.

“Exercise Midnight Warrior was a true test of platform mastery for the five students of the inaugural Poseidon Qualified Weapons Instructor Course. The demanding fortnight strengthened our operational skills, enhanced our teamwork, and highlighted the Poseidon’s versatility in complex environments.”

“Flying the first UK Poseidon mission to the North Pole has been a career highlight. The continuous daylight and stunning Arctic scenery made for some of the most memorable flying I’ve experienced. This exercise proved the RAF ability to project power and maintain situational awareness in one of the world’s most challenging theatres.”

Exercise Midnight Warrior also demonstrated RAF capacity to conduct sustained operational sorties from deployed locations in the North Atlantic and High North. Working closely with three NATO warships and a NATO submarine off Bergen, the exercise reinforced the vital role of the Poseidon in maritime security and anti-submarine warfare.

The strong partnership with the Royal Norwegian Air Force continues to maximise Poseidon’s lethality and operational effect. Future exercises will build on this foundation, further enhancing the RAF ability to operate seamlessly alongside NATO allies in demanding environments.

This achievement underlines the professionalism, skill, and adaptability of RAF aircrew and personnel operating the Poseidon, reinforcing the aircraft’s status as a key asset in protecting UK and allied interests worldwide.
