Diwali is celebrated by both Hindu’s and Sikh’s around the world, as well as those serving in our Armed Forces.

The festival is a chance for families and friends to come together and share food in celebration of their unity.  It is spiritually symbolised by the lighting of lamps in the darkness, representing the fight of good over evil; knowledge over ignorance; and hope over despair.

Diwali offers the chance to draw confidence from the knowledge that ultimately good will triumph over evil, ignorance, loss of hope, and despair in the darkest of hours.  This is why it is known as the 'Festival of Lights' and is why candles are lit and often fireworks are set off.

Chief of the Air Staff Sir Mike Wigston delivered the below message, wishing all those celebrating a very Happy Diwali 2021.

"Each year, Diwali is celebrated by Sikhs and Hindus around the world, including those serving in our Armed Forces and across Defence.  Celebrated by the lighting of lamps, it symbolises the journey from the darkness into light, hope over despair and knowledge over ignorance. The festival is a chance for family, loved ones and friends to come together, which we all appreciate more than ever this year.  On behalf of the Royal Air Force, I wish you all a very Happy Diwali."

Happy Diwali!
