Largest ever deployment of RAF Poseidon Maritime Aircraft supporting NATO in Iceland

P-8A Poseidon aircraft from 120 Squadron, based at RAF Lossiemouth, Scotland, deployed 3 of its P-8A Fleet to Keflavik Air Base in Iceland – the largest deployment of the RAF P-8A fleet so far. The mission of the Maritime Patrol Aircraft and associated personnel was to undertake routine operations in the region and confirms the UK P-8 force’s unwavering commitment to NATO.

The deployment also provided an invaluable opportunity for air and groundcrews to practice Agile Combat Employment (ACE) functions, confirming the RAF’s ability to rapidly deploy and employ its cutting-edge capabilities in diverse and challenging environments.

The deployment also recognised the importance of Iceland in the collective defence of the North Atlantic and Arctic region, as it holds a critical geo-strategic position within NATO’s plans, serving as a key location for monitoring and securing the High North. The UK, alongside other NATO allies, continues to collaborate closely with Iceland to ensure the security and stability of this vital region. The deployment of 120 Squadron to Keflavik underscores the importance of this partnership and the shared commitment to safeguarding the maritime domain.

“This deployment to Iceland highlights the enduring importance of the North Atlantic and Arctic to the security of the Alliance. 120 Squadron has a proud history of working closely with Iceland, dating back to our vital role protecting these waters the last time the Squadron was based here during the Second World War. Today, operating the P-8A Poseidon, we continue that legacy by contributing to NATO’s collective defence and ensuring the security of this strategically critical region. It’s an honour to work alongside our Icelandic partners and NATO allies in our constant endeavour to safeguard the maritime domain.”

It also offered valuable experience in real-world operations, enhancing the UK and its allies’ ability to implement regional plans effectively. While in Iceland, the RAF collaborated closely with key partners, including the US and Canada.

Equipped with advanced sensors and weapons systems, the P-8A Poseidon is ideally suited to 120 Squadron’s mission of safeguarding the UK’s maritime interests and strengthening NATO’s collective security.
