November 8th is National STEM Day and to celebrate the RAF remind us that Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths is for everyone,

Senior Aircraftwoman (Technician) Maryam Akram also shared why STEM is so important in today's society.  There is also a free booklet available, jam-packed with challenges, puzzle, and the chance to find out about the inspiring STEM careers.  More can be read here, https://www.facebook.com/watch/?v=349691496957085.

Also, the RAF Youth and STEM Team continued to deliver a wide range STEM engagement activities across the UK to school children, most recently at Willoughby Academy in Bourne.  Willoughby Academy is an all age (2 – 19 years) Special Academy for pupils with moderate, severe, profound and complex learning needs.  The Willoughby Academy vision aims to inspire every child to achieve excellence in their learning and personal development through creativity and innovation in a happy and safe environment and it was a privilege for the RAF STEM Ambassadors to assist that vision.

Following discussions about suitable activities and how best to work with the young people with the School’s Intervention Manager, Evelyn Cox, the team were invited to deliver a Glider Build STEM session to three of the senior classes.

The Glider Build activity talked the young people through the theory of flight and the role of each major component on an aircraft before setting the students the challenge of building and flying their own Glider from Balsa wood and paper.  Throughout the activity the STEM Ambassadors were exceptionally impressed with the enthusiasm, participation and range of understanding the students demonstrated.

Everybody successfully built and flew their gliders, with a few students even getting some aerobatic rolls completed during test flights!

"A massive thank you to you all for visiting Willoughby yesterday, the pupils are still buzzing!"

The STEM Ambassadors had an amazing day with the students, building not only the student’s knowledge, but also experiencing and gaining personal confidence in delivery of STEM to young people with Special Education Needs.  The RAF STEM Ambassadors look forward to using these skills again soon to demonstrate and reinforce the statement that STEM is for everyone.
