RAF LEAD, the leadership development programme for high potential enlisted aviators, has received a top accolade in the international Learning Awards for 2025.

The awards, organised by the Learning and Performance Institute (LPI), showcase innovation, excellence, and achievement in workplace learning. This year, entrants came from 56 countries.

The RAF LEAD team received a Bronze Award in the category for People Development Programme of the Year (Public Sector/Not for Profit).

RAF LEAD was recognised for its innovative approach, effective needs analysis and verification, learner and sponsor support, and sustained organisational impact.

After a rigorous nomination and judging process, the RAF LEAD team eventually shared the stage with the category winner and the runner-up, the World Food Programme and Royal National Lifeboat Institution respectively.

“We're delighted to receive a Bronze [Award] for RAF LEAD in the People Development Category, particularly given the exceptionally high-quality competition. This award reflects the hard work and commitment, not just of the Talent Development Team who designed and deliver RAF LEAD, but also that of the huge number of dedicated SNCOs and officers across Defence, who support the RAF LEAD participants at Unit level.”

There are now more than 150 aviators from Air Specialist 1 to Flight Sergeant on the RAF LEAD programme, with new groups starting every three months.

Participants are eligible for the programme if they receive a leadership talent marker in their most recent appraisal. Once onboard, individuals take part in a range of core activities, including the development of a Personal Development Plan, a Level 5 Coaching and Mentoring Course, RAF Mentor Me, and a wide range of electives that further support their development. Examples of electives have included shadowing a senior officer; reverse mentoring of station execs; attendance at RAF and Defence Conferences; being part of the Shadow Board, and attendance at a range of short courses.

“The Learning Awards is not just about recognising excellence; it’s about showcasing the incredible impact that learning professionals and organisations have on people’s lives and careers. This year’s record-breaking entries demonstrate how innovation in workplace learning continues to transform businesses and empower individuals worldwide.”
