On Wednesday at RAF Benson, a rare sight unfolded, The Prince of Wales and Crown Prince Al Hussein bin Abdullah II of Jordan walking side by side, touring squadrons, inspecting aircraft, and engaging with service personnel.
This visit was more than ceremonial. It painted a portrait of two heirs whose paths converge in more ways than their royal lineage: in aviation, service, and mutual respect.
Prince William has long carried the banner of military service. Before becoming heir apparent, he trained at RAF Shawbury and went onto become a leading search and rescue pilot with No. 22 Squadron at RAF Valley.
His connection to that squadron deepened in recent years: when No. 22 Squadron reformed at RAF Benson in 2020, it brought his past service and present commitments closer to home.
Crown Prince Al Hussein brings his own aviation credentials. In 2019, he completed helicopter pilot training with the Royal Jordanian Air Force (RJAF) and holds the rank of Major in the Jordanian Armed Forces.
His training gives him direct insight into rotor-wing operations, which resonates strongly with the home of RAF Benson’s helicopter squadrons.
At RAF Benson, both princes toured operational squadrons and hangars, meeting trainee aircrew and technical staff, observing aircraft and discussing mission roles.
The visit underscores more than protocol: it’s a symbol of defence diplomacy, where shared values of service, capability and international cooperation are showcased through meaningful engagements.
"The event signals a robust relationship and mutual respect for the Armed Forces.”
Kensington Palace noted.
Beyond the uniforms and aircraft lies a deeper personal connection. The two heirs have remained close friends, not just representatives of nation states, but individuals with overlapping passions in aviation, leadership and fostering defence partnerships.
As the two heirs walked among the hangars and mingled with personnel, they offered a living reminder that bonds between nations are often built on the strengths, stories and shared service of individuals.
