Sub-hunting in the High North: RAF Poseidon Leads NATO Training Exercise

RAF Lossiemouth’s Poseidon P-8A Force has taken centre stage in Exercise Dynamic Mongoose 2026, delivering the UK’s air power contribution to one of NATO’s premier anti-submarine warfare exercises.

Over two weeks (18–29 May), NATO Maritime Command brought together surface ships, submarines, and aircraft from the UK, Norway, the Netherlands, Portugal, Germany and Denmark in the challenging waters of the North Sea and High North. The objective: sharpen allied capability to detect and defeat underwater threats in one of the Alliance’s most strategically vital regions.

Operating as both hunter and hunted, RAF Poseidon crews worked alongside allied forces in complex, high-pressure scenarios designed to mirror real-world conflict.

Anti-submarine warfare remains one of the most demanding tasks in modern operations.

“It’s like trying to find a needle in a haystack,” said one P8 aircrew member. “Do it alone and it’s incredibly difficult; but together, sharing small pieces of intelligence, you build the bigger picture of what’s happening below the surface.”

That collaboration, across air, surface, and subsurface forces, is at the heart of NATO’s advantage.

Why the High North Matters

The exercise unfolded across waters off Norway and Iceland—a region of growing strategic importance. Critical shipping lanes and undersea infrastructure make the High North essential to both NATO security and global stability.

Dynamic Mongoose ensures allies can operate seamlessly in this environment, maintaining freedom of manoeuvre and deterring potential adversaries through visible, credible capability.

Technology Meets Teamwork

RAF P8 crews employed advanced detection tools, including sonobuoys and Electronic Signal Underwater Sound (ESUS) devices, to simulate real-world engagements against submarines.

Each sortie provided live training opportunities, blending tactical flying, tracking expertise, and communications under pressure. The result is a force better prepared for real-world operations—where coordination and speed of decision-making are critical.

Strengthening NATO Partnerships

The exercise also highlighted deepening collaboration between the UK and Germany. A German Navy P-8A Poseidon detachment operated from RAF Lossiemouth, reflecting the growing cooperation enabled by the Trinity House Agreement, signed in November 2024.

“This deployment offered an outstanding opportunity to conduct intensive maritime operations alongside allies and strengthen interoperability. In today’s challenging security environment, unity, trust and cooperation among P‑8A nations are essential for credible defence.”

They added that the professionalism and support at RAF Lossiemouth embodied the spirit of the agreement and contributed directly to the success of the exercise.

Ready for the Real World

Exercise Dynamic Mongoose is more than training, it is a proving ground. By stress-testing crews, systems and alliances in demanding conditions, it ensures NATO forces remain ready to respond together, wherever and whenever required.

For RAF P-8 crews, the message is clear:

Integration, interoperability, and shared intelligence are decisive advantages beneath the surface.
