Exercise Pitch Black 2026 brought together air forces from across the Indo-Pacific and beyond, testing their ability to operate side-by-side in one of the world's largest and most demanding military air exercises.
For the Royal Air Force, around 80 personnel travelled more than 14,000 kilometres to northern Australia, where the Air Mobility Force demonstrated the people, platforms and partnerships that make global operations possible.
Operating across more than 2.2 million square kilometres of training airspace, crews faced the vast distances, complexity and pace that define modern coalition operations. It is these challenges that make Pitch Black one of the RAF’s most valuable opportunities to strengthen interoperability, sharpen operational readiness and build relationships that underpin future missions.

Throughout the exercise, RAF Voyager proved critical to coalition air operations. Flying 11 sorties and around 90 flying hours, the aircraft covered more than 25,000 nautical miles. The aircraft offloaded 114 tonnes of fuel through 41 air-to-air refuelling contacts. In doing so, Voyager enabled 57 receiver aircraft from Germany, Spain and Australia to remain in the fight while also transporting more than 130 personnel in and out of theatre.
Leading the UK contribution, Voyager showcased the versatility that has made it a cornerstone of RAF air mobility. Alongside its air-to-air refuelling mission, the aircraft enabled the RAF to exercise its Strategic Aeromedical Evacuation capability with the Critical Care Air Support Team (CCAST) for the first time at Exercise Pitch Black, demonstrating how a tanker aircraft can rapidly become a flying intensive care unit, capable of carrying and treating critically ill patients over vast distances.
Air Commodore Dan James said the deployment was ultimately about people rather than platforms:
“What’s been most impressive is the range of our people that have managed to integrate themselves into the Australian-led setup here. Whether that’s our chefs, our movers, our logistics specialists, our planners, our engineers or our aircrew, it’s been absolutely fantastic to see them working hand in glove with our partners and allies in the Indo-Pacific region.”
That integration was evident across every aspect of the exercise, from planning multinational missions to sustaining aircraft, supporting personnel and delivering specialist medical training. It is this ability to work seamlessly alongside allies that sits at the heart of Pitch Black.

For Flight Lieutenant Sam, one of the RAF Voyager pilots deployed to Australia, the exercise demonstrated the unique role the Air Mobility Force plays in enabling coalition air operations.
“Voyager has been very busy on Pitch Black so far. We’ve flown every day providing gas to our international partners – the Germans, Spanish and Australians – while also taking Tactical Medical Wing in the back and training them for mass casualty events.”
While air-to-air refuelling remained Voyager’s primary task, the aircraft also attracted significant international interest in its aeromedical capability. During the exercise, the RAF demonstrated how Voyager can rapidly transform into a strategic aeromedical evacuation platform, capable of moving critically ill patients across vast distances while continuing advanced medical care in the air.
Working alongside international partners was a key part of that training.
Sergeant Victoria from RAF Tactical Medical Wing said the exercise highlighted how quickly multinational teams come together when it matters most.
“We turned up to the medical treatment facility earlier and quite quickly realised that it didn’t matter what uniform everyone was in. Everyone just quickly worked together. It didn’t matter that we were taking over from the Australians or that they were handing over to a British team. Everyone just went into medical mode, seamlessly, and it all worked really well.”
Warrant Officer James said the exercise reinforced the value of rehearsing the complete patient care pathway alongside partner nations.
“Military medicine is a team effort.”
He added that training together allows medical teams to exchange knowledge, compare procedures and strengthen the professional relationships that underpin future coalition operations.

Away from the flightline, the Air Mobility Force continued working around the clock to sustain the UK detachment. Engineers generated aircraft in demanding tropical conditions, logisticians moved freight and equipment across Australia, planners coordinated multinational flying programmes, while chefs ensured personnel remained fuelled for the task.
Corporal Lucy said every role contributes to operational success.
“Supporting roles are massively important to the success of this exercise. Everyone needs to get fed. Aircraft need to get refuelled, things need to be moved around, so every role plays a key part in a massive exercise such as Pitch Black.”
Reflecting on the deployment, Flight Lieutenant Sam said the greatest value of the exercise would be what participants took home.
“The things I’ve learned from Pitch Black are probably our interoperability with other partner nations. We’ve had chefs, movers, media communications people and engineers all embedded with our allies, and hopefully we’ve learned a lot from each other that we can take back home.”
Air Commodore Dan James said those relationships are ultimately what make exercises like Pitch Black so valuable.
“Being able to work alongside your partners and allies in a seamless way because you’ve practised it is really important to the Royal Air Force. Having that ability is something that we really value and train for.”
Exercise Pitch Black 2026 demonstrated far more than the reach of RAF Voyager. It highlighted the professionalism, adaptability and teamwork of the entire Air Mobility Force. From pilots and medics to chefs, planners, engineers, logisticians and support staff, every member of the UK detachment played a role in strengthening partnerships, enhancing interoperability and ensuring that the RAF remains ready to operate alongside allies whenever and wherever required.
