Air Specialist (Class 2) Brooks
My career highlight so far
The highlight of my career so far has been deploying overseas to RAF Akrotiri within the first six months of arriving at 1 Squadron RAF Regiment. This has allowed me to experience a new and exciting environment. I think the next step in my career will be to attend and pass a Machine Guns Cadre, becoming qualified in the Sustained Fires role. This will allow me to be part of the Support Weapons Flight. My long-term goal is to attend and pass the Pre-Parachute Selection Course, followed by a posting to 16 Air Assault Brigade, initially as a Tactical Air Control Party signaller, with the overall goal of training to become Joint Terminal Attack Controller.
The best thing about my current role
The best thing about my role as a RAF Regiment Gunner is the ability to learn and operate with different weapon systems, from the Rifle to the General-Purpose Machine Gun Light Role. Also, being able to practice individual defensive tactics, this has allowed me to fully understand the discipline required within my role and has given me great confidence in what I am able to achieve.

Flight Sergeant Hill
RAF Regiment Officer
My career highlight so far
One of the most defining highlights of my RAF career has been the opportunity to serve as an ambassador to the Royal British Legion while specialising in a multitude of military skills, including sniping and machine guns. This unique combination has allowed me to honour the legacy of our veterans while continuously pushing the boundaries of my own capabilities. Whether representing the RAF in ceremonial events or honing my expertise on operations, every experience has deepened my appreciation for our Armed Forces' rich traditions and the sacrifices made by those who came before us. By combining my passion for serving my country with the proficiency in diverse military skills, I've been able to make a meaningful impact both within the RAF and the wider community, embodying the values of dedication, honour, and service every step of the way.
The best thing about my current role
The best thing about my role in the RAF is the dynamic diversity it offers, spanning from the intense operational challenges of serving in the RAF Regiment to the exhilarating responsibilities as the RAF Triathlon Performance Director. Transitioning between these two worlds allows me to experience the full spectrum of what the RAF has to offer. In the Regiment, I'm entrusted with the development of Regular and Reserve personnel. As the Triathlon Performance Director, I have the privilege of nurturing talent, fostering a culture of excellence, and leading our athletes to achieve their utmost potential on the global stage. The balance between these roles not only keeps me engaged and fulfilled but also allows me to bring a unique perspective to each endeavour. It's a testament to the RAF's commitment to versatility and personal growth, and I'm proud to play a part in both realms.

RAF Police
My career highlight so far
I've been in the RAF Police for four and a half years and I've had multiple career highlights. From deploying on Operation Pitting in Afghanistan to setting up the Air Transport Security detachment in Poland. Another highlight has been trailing with the F35 aircrafts after their deployment to Alaska, bringing them back to the UK. I also had the pleasure in taking part of the Battle of Britain Parade and deploying to the Falkland Islands for 6 months on policing duties.
The best thing about my current role
I'm currently based on 1(Tactical) Police and Security Squadron at RAF Brize Norton, and deploy on routine Air Mobility Taskings globally. I have deployed to the high north of Norway, as far south as the Falkland Islands, to multiple states in USA and to Asia and Australia. All the deployments have been unique and different to the last, which is the best part about the job. You also get to work alongside the flying squadrons, movements and other trades and other militaries globally.

Aircraft Technician (Mechanical)
My career highlight so far
The highlight of my career so far would be travelling to Alaska as part of a detachment with 617 Squadron. On the trip, I was able to work in a challenging environment, and having the opportunity to work alongside the Australian and American Air Forces overseas was an amazing experience. The work I did helped prepare me for many challenges I’d face later in my career and the opportunities to travel and see Alaska were incredible.
The best thing about my current role
The people are easily the best thing about my role. Working in the Forces can be demanding and challenging at times. Being away from friends and family whether overseas or on the opposite side of the country presents a challenge for us all. The Squadron is welcoming to all arrivals and makes sure that everyone feels a part of the Squadron. We also make sure that there’s time for those around us, with events for friends and family to come along and be a part of our lives and enjoy the RAF like we do.

Since joining the Band of the Royal Auxiliary Air Force in 2016, I have been involved in so many events it’s hard to choose the highlights. From the Royal Edinburgh and Belfast International Military Tattoo, to state occasions including Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II’s Platinum Jubilee, the State Funeral of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and The Coronation of Their Majesties King Charles III and Queen Camilla. Plus, performing at the Royal Albert Hall for the RAF 100 concert, playing with the woodwind quintet in Berlin and as part of a duo in Cyprus.
The best thing about my current role
I originally served in the regular RAF as a Musician in the 1990s. After a significant gap, it’s now great to be able to serve again as a Reserve, I never thought I’d have the opportunity to do this again after so long! It’s flexible and fits really well with my day job, with so many transferable skills from one to the other. I absolutely love being a RAF Reserve Musician. I’d say the best things are the opportunities to be involved in so many different occasions both in the UK and overseas, the training and skills I am acquiring and, of course, the camaraderie amongst my fellow RAF Musicians.

Logistics Officer
My career highlight so far
I believe I’m part of the best Profession in the RAF! Some career highlights include: being involved in Operation Pitting out of Al Minhad Air Base. New to the trade of Movements, I was redeployed from Operation Cattalo in Duqm, to Al Minhad Air Base, to provide the ground/movements support of all military SP and equipment in and out of Th via various Military Air Transport platforms. Whilst the whole Operation was over a short period, working at that tempo and in such heat (40/50+ celsius), and watching all parties pull together to get the ‘job done’ was fantastic and something I’ll never forget.
Another additional highlight is winning 8 x Inter Service titles consecutively with RAF Hockey!
The best thing about my current role
Being a RAF Liaison Officer in the Middle East and Asia and a part of Operational Support Squadron, I’m fortunate enough to be able to cover 18 x countries in my Area of Responsibility. This role allows me the opportunity to travel and meet a wide spread of different people in the region, whilst also learning about their cultures and beliefs, one that I don’t think many other roles offer.

RAF Regiment Gunner
My career highlight so far
The opportunity to travel and work within the whole of Defence. I've been away on numerous operations with the RAF including Kuwait, Jordan, Iraq, Afghanistan and Cyprus. My role in the RAF Regiment has also allowed me to work with other services, seeing me detached to 45 Commando Royal Marines for 3 years, completing a further tour of Afghanistan. I also had the opportunity to go on training exercises with the Royal Navy, including operating from a ship for 6 months whilst conducting training in various countries around the Mediterranean.
Further, I was loaned to the Czech Republic government as part of the British Military Advisory Training Team (BMATT), living in Czechia for two years. During this time, I delivered training to a host of foreign militaries including Poland, Ukraine, Kosovo, Serbia, Morocco, and Turkmenistan. Working with other nations was extremely rewarding, as you could see a product in the way the students embraced us as instructors, learnt new skills, and showed great improvement over the 4 weeks of training.
The best thing about my current role
Having spent my time as a Gunner, a Section Commander and a Tac Sergeant on a Very High Readiness squadron, I enjoy mentoring and developing the next generation of war fighters, combining my experience with the technology of the modern era.
I'd feel extremely honoured and proud to be lucky enough to be promoted to the rank of Warrant Officer and posted back to II Squadron RAF Regiment, leading the next generation as the senior soldier on the RAF Regiment's only airborne and premier squadron.

Flight Lieutenant Garewal
My career highlight so far
When I reflect on my career so far it's very difficult for me to pinpoint one occasion because I have thoroughly enjoyed my time in the RAF. The pride in my parents’ eyes when they saw my brother and I together in uniform at my brother’s graduation ceremony at RAFC Cranwell is something that will always remain with me.
In addition, the gratification I felt whilst walking the mall for RAF 100 was another highpoint in my career so far. I felt so humbled when an elderly woman held my hand at an event at Trafalgar Square and said she always dreamt of being in the military. Seeing me in uniform made her feel so proud. It really was surreal!
I have immense respect for the serving members of Armed Forces who live by our RAF Ethos and Core values, and I feel blessed to be a part of this great organisation.
The best thing about my current role
Currently, I am 1 Group SO3 Force Generation which involves managing the FGen requirements for 1 Group personnel in support of IA FGen tasks. It's a challenging role because you are making the difficult decision of providing a suitable person for an operational role with least impact to Group’s output. This at times can be tricky.
The best thing about my role is that it's reactive, so every day is different. Although some of it can be planned, most of the time you get a curveball, and you'll have to quickly shape everything as per the operational requirement.

Corporal Gunson
Physical Training Instructor
My career highlight so far
In 2023 I was given the opportunity to attend a 2 week long course in Arizona, looking at how elite athletes are trained in America. We got to take part in training sessions with high level American Football players, spoke with industry professionals looking at human performance research, and discussed how we could apply this to our Personnel.
I’ve had so many other great experiences in my career so but this one really stood out for me.
The best thing about my current role
For so many people in the Service, physical training is the best part of their day. It’s an opportunity to feel good and see people outside of their usual work environment. I love that I get to be the person to make that happen. I’ve been able to help lots of people achieve their health and fitness goals - to pass the RAF Fitness Test, return from injury, or hit a PB.
In my current role I get to support and educate RAF Regiment Trainees. Seeing them develop from day 1 to reaching the high standards required for the role.

I’ve had some interesting and different roles but my most enjoyable was being a Phase 1 training instructor at Recruit Training Squadron, RAF Halton. Seeing people turn up, develop themselves and overcome the challenges that training puts on people was always energising. Doing that job showed me that the RAF recruits good people from so many backgrounds, and being part of their journey to being in the RAF will always be a fond memory. I always say that I will never have a job as good as that again.
The best thing about my current role
My current role in Media & Communications on the RAF Inclusion team is so varied, eye-opening, and fun. It is such a learning curve and the team I am part of are very passionate about the work we do. I want to work in media and communications when I leave the RAF so the job I do now is almost like a three-year apprenticeship. I also happen to work with so many people from across defence and love to hear people’s story and then try to tell them stories in an engaging way.

The work on Drones training for the cadets, combining elements of military and civil policy, is incredibly exciting to be part of. I was honoured in 2022 to be awarded an MBE. That said, I don't think there's anything better as a Royal Air Force Air Cadets Officer than to see how the opportunities Air Cadets are offered empowers them to thrive - I remember one cadet who I watched grow from joining incredibly shy to learning to lead, becoming an NCO and then joining the RAF. I've since bumped into her at RAF Cosford and she had absolutely blossomed, which is so rewarding.
The best thing about my current role
Being able to make aerospace accessible to young people is a real privilege. Almost always, the Air Experience Flight or Gliding Induction Flight that the cadets participate in is the first time they’ve had any hands-on flying opportunity, and their smiles say it all! I also work on elements of Aerospace strategy, ensuring we are providing high-quality training and exposure for cadets to the next generation of aerospace technology, from drones training to visiting hangars, hearing from leaders in the space sector and so much more. It’s such an exciting and inspiring sector to be able to provide access to!

My career highlight has been evolving from a novice Tug of War participant in 2017 to the head coach of the RAF Odiham team, victors at The Royal Highland Games in Braemar, where we were honoured with the Shield by His Majesty The King. I began my journey with the RAF Brize Norton team, drawing on my Strongman experience, and soon after, competed for the RAF at the Inter-Services competition, which was an eye-opener for me. Since that pivotal moment, the RAF has supported my sporting achievements which included representing Scotland at the British and Irish Championships, I have progressed to become a level 3 qualified judge and the esteemed RAF Head Coach.

I joined the RAF Reserves in 1998, and as the longest serving reservist on 504 Squadron, I have had many highlights across my career. Operation Telic was the first time I was mobilised alongside over 10,000 British Military personnel; it was memorable because it changed the course of my life, leading to my career as a Prison Officer. I have also been involved in ceremonial events, representing the Royal Air Force Reserves at the Golden Jubilee, Diamond Jubilee and the RAF 100 parades. It was special to be part of these events and to be a part of history.
The best thing about my current role
I have met many inspirational people in my RAF career, that I have enjoyed working with. In my role I help to deliver the output of a logistics squadron, supporting personnel from the start of their career and being there at every stage of their service. It's a privilege assisting people to enjoy some of the opportunities that I have had over the years and see them grow.

Deploying on Exercise Broaden Horizon in 2022 and 2023, I was able to utilise my civilian skills and knowledge to good effect, passing on my experience and learning to junior members of the engineering community and generate output for the wider Royal Air Force. The entire Operation was a truly humbling experience. Meeting the veterans and hearing their stories was something so incredibly special.

I’ve been incredibly lucky, both as a regular and reserve, to travel around the world and represent the RAF. This includes Japan, the US, Qatar, Oman, and Nigeria to mention a few. Particular highlights have been a tour at RAF Lossiemouth, where I led the Station’s public relations and social media outputs, and a tour in MOD Main Building supporting the Assistant Chief of the Air Staff. More recently I've been leading the delivery of a second documentary series for the RAF – Top Guns: Inside the RAF. It's been an exceptionally complex project but a deeply rewarding experience, and a privilege to see how people from all walks of life are supporting the RAF’s operations in the UK and overseas 24/7. Watch on the Channel 4 website!
The best thing about my current role
Media Operations is one of the more unique roles in the RAF. I usually describe it as having an ‘access all areas’ pass to talk to anyone, and learn more about what they do and how they contribute to air and space operations. It’s often through these conversations that our best stories are found! I regularly work in teams of all sizes, often with visual communicators who have an extraordinary vision as to how they'll turn our ideas into video or photo gold. I've been an RAF Reserve for just over a year, and balance my role with a full-time job as a Media Relations Manager for Leonardo, an aerospace and defence company which produces electronics, helicopters, and cyber solutions. To see these trainees progress through their technical training, whilst overcoming both personal and professional challenges, and develop into confident and credible technicians is one of the greatest experiences you can witness.

During the historic withdrawal from Hong Kong in 1997, I was tasked with couriering communications equipment out of the territory. Operating out of Kowloon, this resulted in me and my police escorts flying in and out of the infamous Kai Tak Airport, in RAF Hercules and ex-RAF Belfast heavy-lift transports, to other overseas locations and the UK.
Watching a Belfast’s pilot de-mist the windscreen with his sleeve whilst aiming at a small checkerboard on the side of a mountain so he could then conduct a 90-degree turn and land at the world’s most treacherous airport is truly unforgettable!
The best thing about my current role
In over 40 years in the RAF, I've seen the importance of information and digital systems rise to its current unprecedented level. As a member of RAF Digital’s team of specialists, I've had the chance to use my experience to resolve many complex Digital challenges and pass some of my experience to the next generation, who will inevitably take up the reins after me.
Also, outside of working hours, I've been allowed, even encouraged, to support the local community for over a decade as a volunteer Military Co-Responder with the Ambulance Service, which is so emotionally rewarding.

Hands down, sitting in a Lancaster while the engineers did an engine test was the best! It’s not something you think will happen when you become a vicar, but as a Padre we walk alongside people through whatever they may be going through, which means they invite us into the good and the bad. That happened to be a good highlight, and I guess another highlight has been to journey alongside people in their grief. It sounds weird to be a highlight, but supporting and loving people in their pain is something that brings me meaning.
The best thing about my current role
My current role as Station Chaplain at RAF College Cranwell means I have the best of two worlds! I do usual Station Chaplaincy such as pastoral appointments, community engagement, services and (my favourite) sharing the Haribo. But, at Cranwell, we have the added bonus of working with all Officer Cadets, teaching lessons on beliefs and values. Teaching is fun, but the best bit by far is spending time with them, getting to know them and being part of their transition from civvie street and stepping in to their full potential, not just as Officers, but in discovering who they are.

The highlight of my career has to be completing Phase 1 training at Halton. I had an idea of what to expect and I knew that sleep deprivation was going to be my biggest challenge being a mature recruit, but I gave it my all and came out winning at the end. The best part was seeing my family and friends sat in the Grandstand on Graduation Day after not seeing them for 10 weeks; there were definitely a few tears shed, even from my teenage children. Since joining the RAF as a Survival Equipment Technician in 2024, I have also had the opportunity to take part in a Remembrance Parade in Wolverhampton as one of the Drum Head Party. This was a special moment for me, standing in front of the crowd filled me with a huge sense of pride and emotion knowing that I was representing the Royal Air Force.
The best thing about my current role
As I am still relatively new to the trade, I am still finding my way around the vast array of equipment that Survival Equipment Technicians maintain. Whether that’s Aircrew Equipment Assemblies such as helmets and Life Preserver Jackets, or single and multi-seat life rafts. What I enjoy most about the role at RAF St Mawgan is that no day is the same. This can be quite demanding at times and definitely keeps you on your toes, but it is also one of the most rewarding, especially knowing that the kit you have just worked could play a big part in another trades person's role.

I have had numerous experiences where, when I reflect, I have been amazed by the places, the people, and the opportunities that I have been lucky enough to undertake. I have learnt to ski and competed at biathlon, ski-dived, worked in the UK and overseas, and deployed on exercises and operations. I was also selected to attend the Advanced Command and Staff Course, which saw me working alongside Army, Navy, RAF and international colleagues, learning about international relations to prepare us for future defence and security challenges. I even had the opportunity to travel to Vietnam, which was a particular highlight!
The best thing about my current role
My people. I look after a large team of staff ranging from people who have just joined the RAF through to people who have heaps of service experience. It is a genuine privilege to be responsible for a team who provide the welfare, service discipline and HR Operations for RAF personnel working across 11 Stations.

I really can’t pick one! Every role I have been lucky enough to undertake, I have tried to make the most of. People are everything and I have been fortunate enough to work with people who have made positive differences to people's lives.
As a proud Cornishman at St Mawgan to have been here at every rank is amazing, as I have witnessed many changes and see how we continually grow as a Station.
The best thing about my current role
In short, it’s the people I am lucky to both work with and support. At RAF St Mawgan, my main role is housing and pre- and post- deployment briefs and activity but also getting involved with community events.
Our whole force approach to the RAF St Mawgan family means we are consistently delivering activities for our people. Our team’s mindset (Carol Atkinson and Flight Sergeant Churchill) is very much about continuing to try and raise the bar. From music events to charity walks promoting our local foodbanks, we want to continually support our people the best way we can.

Being able to bring my hobbies and interests into the competitive environment has been an absolute joy. From Inter-Service Chess, Brazilian Jui Jitsu, Wargaming and eSports to name my favourites.
Completing 24-hour charity events in showcasing the competitive, planning and skill elements within eSports stage has been one of the latest for me. Working with a great team to deliver some of the most enjoyable and difficult challenges I have had the pleasure to be a part of.
The best thing about my current role
Right now, working in Service Discipline I can say that this is one of my favourite roles I have taken on so far. Conducting investigations, assisting with summary hearings and Court Martials has significantly expanded my Service experience, knowledge and awareness. Not only following the discipline processes but also working alongside the Service Complaints team and giving support where needed has been greatly rewarding in many cases.

I’ve had so many memorable experiences in my role as an Royal Air Force Reservist. Watching the closing ceremony of the Commonwealth Games behind the Royal box was incredible, as was taking part in the King’s Coronation parade. I still can’t quite believe I was there, stood in Buckingham Palace Gardens giving three cheers for the King, it was such a historic moment I was proud to be part of. A highlight of 2024 was being awarded a Director Reserves Commendation in the New Year’s Honours List, an honour I could never have imagined when I joined the Reserves 3 years ago!
The best thing about my current role
I love the diversity of being an RAF Reservist. As a Military Transport Driver I operate a variety of different vehicles from HGVs to coaches, I’ve travelled across Europe and taken part in NATO Exercises alongside Regular and Reserve colleagues. I’ve been involved in recruitment events and honours and awards ceremonies, and participated in adventure training and RAF Sport! The opportunities available to me are such a contrast to my civilian job.

I’ve had a few special moments in the military already. I recently received my Sporting Colours [awards presented to personnel who have represented the Royal Air Force in their chosen sport] for 2023 and 2024. It’s pretty awesome getting awards for something I love doing, and although I’m competitive, I’m always grateful to be part of military competitions.
I had a special win at the RAF champs ‘25 where I won the Medium dressage class with my horse King’s Silver. I hadn’t planned to do that class but we made some mistakes the day before. I was on the verge of withdrawing from the Advanced Medium and going home, but I swapped my entries and asked to ride Medium 6 again. He was foot perfect, got a great score and we topped the podium with some fantastic prizes.
The best thing about my current role
I take part in duty weekends and driving courses, which are mainly training for me. I also enjoy doing a day on the recruitment stand when I can because I love talking about the opportunities as a reservist, the friends you make and the places you get to visit.
I always push the sporting opportunities because I wouldn’t be able to compete with my horse if it wasn’t for the support from the RAF Equitation Association and the RAF Central Fund.
Sport is brilliant because I ride on a team where a senior officer might ask me the best way to ride a course or ask for help in the warm up, and genuinely value and respect my insight. I’ve been fortunate enough to be on the Senior squads for Dressage, Show Jumping and eventing for the last three years.

My career highlight so far
To date, I have had two standout career highlights. The first was the opportunity to fly in a Typhoon, delivering air-to-air photography in support of Exercise Atlantic Eagles. This experience not only honed my technical skills in a challenging environment but also allowed me to capture imagery that showcased air integration and capability.
My second highlight is my current deployment, where I am embedded within the Joint Combat Camera Unit, operating across the Middle East. In this role, I have captured Defence imagery that directly supports UK Defence strategic communications. It has been especially rewarding to see my work achieve widespread reach, with selected imagery being used across major national and international news networks.
The best thing about my current role
The best thing about my role is the variety it offers. One day I might be in central London covering ceremonial events, and the next I could be airborne in a Chinook or another aircraft, capturing completely different outputs. That range keeps the job constantly engaging and challenging. I am also proud to be part of a trade where, more often than not, if it involves the RAF, the imagery people see has been captured by an RAF photographer.
