On 26th October, sixty determined walkers gathered to take on one of Ascension Island’s most demanding physical challenges — an 8-mile (13km) trek to the summit of Green Mountain, the island’s highest peak. Organised as a community event, it drew participants from across the Ascension Island military detachment as well as members of the wider island community.
The route, known for its steepness featured an elevation gain of 859 meters, testing both stamina and spirit. Runners and walkers ascended from volcanic terrain into the lush forest of Green Mountain National Park. Entering the cloud base brought a noticeable drop in temperature, with chilly winds and drizzle adding to the challenge. Undeterred they pushed upward to the Marine Barracks situated at the top, a sight much anticipated by all and the finish line.
The Military detachment showed incredible resilience, and this was rewarded with names across the leader board in both categories, with Sgt Matthew Little placing first for the runners with a winning time of 1hr 19mins, closely followed by Flt Lt Sam Pullen in third. For the walkers, Cpl Joss Taylor took third with a time of 1hr 52mins.
This year’s Dew Pond run was a resounding success, thanks to the incredible support from Ascension Island Scouts, conservationists, AIG staff, and generous sponsors from the USAF contingent and Air Tanker, who welcomed finishers at the Cottage. All participants completed the demanding course — a testament to the spirit of the island community.
