The Royal Research Ship (RSS) Sir David Attenborough made a stop at East Cove Military Port this weekend, offering an exclusive opportunity for invited guests to tour one of the world’s most advanced polar research vessels before it continues its voyage to South Georgia.

Guests included Group Captain Adele Stratton; Mrs Harmer, wife of Commander British Forces South Atlantic Islands (CBF); service personnel and families from BFSAI who were shown around the vessel by its Doctor and Captain Ralph Stevens, Commanding Officer of RSS Sir David Attenborough. The visit provided a unique insight into the ship’s cutting-edge capabilities, life on board, and its vital role in supporting scientific research in the polar regions.

Following its Falklands visit, the vessel will resupply Bird Island and King Edward Point, where it will also conduct a detailed survey of the wharf after recent shingle movement and scouring.

The RSS Sir David Attenborough is currently undertaking part two of its Ice Trials, a pioneering program designed to calibrate its ice load monitoring system. These trials involve an international team of experts and include:

  • Instrumented propeller blades and shafts to measure ice impact forces
  • High-speed cameras to capture hull and propulsion performance in real time
  • On-ice measurements to assess conditions before and during navigation through ice

This is only the second time such trials have ever been conducted globally. The data collected will help optimize vessel performance in extreme conditions while ensuring safety, potentially influencing future marine architecture standards and advancing polar technology.

Captain Stevens commented:

“There is always a danger of being too cautious and not getting the most out of the asset, but equally you need to understand if you are pushing too hard in the ice. These trials will give us that confidence.”

The RSS Sir David Attenborough represents a major leap forward in polar research capability, supporting the UK’s commitment to climate science and environmental stewardship in some of the most challenging environments on Earth.
